Thursday 17th July

The battle with punters was a real roller coaster ride last weekend, but thanks to a couple of results late in the round, we managed to come out on top.

There has been a lot of talk about 'tanking', with the Eagles the primary target, but punters dismissed that and charged into the West Coast in the last game of the round. It was a costly manoeuvre as the Eagles were thrashed by over 12 goals by Richmond, after trailing at the end of the first quarter. Lasseters gave 2.05 for the Eagles earlier in the week (prior to Matthew Richardson pulling out), but on Sunday they were backed from 1.85 into 1.75. On that performance, it may be a while before we see that sort of move for the Eagles, and they now find themselves as 2.00 favourites to win the wooden spoon.

A couple of the outsiders for the round attracted good support, especially at the handicap start. Adelaide had one bet of $18,000 placed on them with 15 points-start against Collingwood, and they were travelling along nicely until suffering injuries to Porplyzia and Burton. The Crows only scored three goals after half time, and the loss of Burton has seen their flag odds blow out to 61.00. There was also plenty of money to say that the Swans could beat Hawthorn, and also stay within 14 points, but they also fell well short. Three separate $10,000 bets were placed on the Swans with 15, 14 and 13 points-start. Looking at the draw, while the Swans look certain to make the finals, it does seem likely that they may finish in the bottom part of the eight, so we have chased their price out to 17.00.

Geelong are another side to suffer injuries, and we will find out how good they are this week. The Cats host the Bulldogs at Skilled Stadium on Saturday, and this is one game that the Cats could lose. We have posted them at 1.56 in early markets, but there has been limited action, with only one bet ($2200) exceeding three figures. The Bulldogs were a bit ordinary against Melbourne last week, but they would have had their eyes on this upcoming match for weeks. A win at Geelong would be a good thing from a psychological point of view leading into the finals.

Richmond defeated Essendon by over six goals back in May, and while the Tigers have improved since then, so have the Bombers. Richmond are returning from that big win over the Eagles, and while we are normally happy to risk sides after an interstate trip, Richmond have a good recent record of three wins in every four games after travelling. When betting opened on Monday, the Tigers were 1.85, but a series of bets (including one of $3500) has seen that price move into 1.78. More
