Thursday 17th July

With Tiger Woods out of the British Open, we have seen an interesting spread of bets coming through, with punters having a rare opportunity to bet on a Major where the great man is missing.

Sergio Garcia will go into round one as clear cut favourite at 12.00. The likeable Garcia has been unlucky at the last two British Opens, and comes into this week in good form having won the Players Championship a few weeks ago, but he is one player who has continuously struggled to put it all together.

Garcia is easily our worst result, with most of the support coming from European punters, and that has been led up by a bet of $2000 each way at 13.00. The weather conditions at Royal Birkdale are tipped to be extremely windy during the first two days, and that would be one of the reasons why a lot of outsiders have been backed, and another reason why several of the American players have been hard to sell.

Justin Rose (41.00), Graeme McDowell (41.00), Stephen Ames (81.00) are in a host of players that have been backed to win big amounts, while punters have taken a particular dislike to most of the better American players including Phil Mickelson who has eased from 13.00 out to 19.00. There is a strong Australian contingent in this year's event, and Geoff Ogilvy has been the best backed of the Aussies at 26.00. Like most of the field, the popular Ogilvy can see there is a good opportunity to write your name in the history books with Tiger missing, and has spent several weeks in England acclimatising to the conditions around Royal Birkdale. Robert Allenby (41.00) is the other Aussie that our punters have put their faith in as he is adept in any conditions.
