Thursday 17th July
Only three favourites managed to win last
weekend in NRL action, and it would be fair to say that the set of results
were one of the biggest ever!
Having said that, there was money for
several of the winning outsiders, with the Titans, the Bulldogs and Souths
all attracting their fair share of support.
The Titans hardly had enough fit players
to pick a side from, and had to take on the Roosters in Sydney, but
surprisingly there was a late splurge for the side from the Gold Coast.
Win bets of $1200 (9.00) and $1800 (7.25) were taken, and there were also
three $10,000 bets taken at the handicap (19˝ and 18˝), but there was
plenty of money going through the Roosters in multis. It was a pretty
similar set of circumstances in the Brisbane v Bulldogs match were the
Broncos were the anchor of most multis on Sunday, and also had a bet of
$11,000 placed on them at 1.09, but we did take two substantial bets
totalling nearly $21,000 for the Bulldogs with 16 points-start. The
Rabbitohs are on a huge winning run, and we can also report that punters
didn't write them off either in their win over Parramatta. Although the
market didn't move much, there were three separate bets of $4000 for
Souths to win at 2.60, and it is hard to believe this is the same side
that was 1.15 to win the wooden spoon a little over a month ago. Souths
are now 26.00 to run last (Cowboys 1.10), and realistically should be at a
much higher quote but we do face big liabilities on them from pre-season
bets.
Jonathan Thurston is out of the Cowboys
side this week, and while many would say that they will get lapped, we are
not so sure. There have been a couple of occasions this year when the
North Queensland side have played ok with Thurston out, and they get a
hefty 15˝ points-start against Brisbane, who were poor last week. North
Queensland won the first encounter 48-20 back in April, but they have gone
downhill since then. A full house, backs to the wall, don't be surprised
if the Cowboys serve it right up to Brisbane.
There has been a good early push for the
Titans to beat Penrith on Saturday night. The match opened with Penrith
slight favourites at 1.87, but the fist $9000 bet on the game was all for
the Titans, and they are now public elects at 1.85. They have only
suffered two defeats at home this year, but how often do we see sides
struggle after an upset win? The other trick to this game is that
Penrith's best from has been away from home, so it will be an intriguing
battle.
The second half effort by the Roosters
against the Titans last week leaves a lot to be desired, and they face a
real danger game in Canberra on Sunday. The 'no names' at Canberra have
done a magnificent job this year, and we think that this is one match
where there can be an upset. The Roosters opened at 1.55, and we were keen
to take them on, but they have already drifted to 1.60, attracting less
than $500 in bets in the first two days of betting.
