The
aptly named Perth Scorchers are the easing favourites to win Saturday
night’s Big Bash Final against the Sydney Sixers. The match has already
been put back 30 minutes as Perth faces a ‘scorcher’ on Saturday, tipped
to be 42 degrees. The Scorchers have been the form side of the
competition, and in their six wins, the batting and bowling stats line up
favourable against the Sydney side. But……the competition has been
dominated by the sides batting first, and more than half of the matches
have been won by the outsiders. Once it was confirmed that speedster
Mitchell Starc would be included in the side, the Sixers firmed from $2.15
into $2.08, which saw Perth drift from $1.70 out to $1.75. The toss will
be vital, and if the Sixers bat first, there is a strong chance that they
may even start favourites…and win.
BASKETBALL
There
was talk late last week that Patrick Mills might join the roster at the
Gold Coast Blaze, but now it appears as though that won’t happen and the
Blaze have eased out to $7.50. Perth Wildcats have been the form side of
the competition and they are now $2.10 favourites ahead of New Zealand at
$2.75. The Breakers are the side that punters have not been keen to back,
whereas we continue to see money for Perth and Townsville.
In the
NBA, it has been all one sided action as most seem to think Miami will
atone for a disappointing season last year. The Heat are now into $2.60
after opening pre-season at $3.25. The Chicago Bulls ($6.00) and Oklahoma
City Thunder ($7.00) are the only other sides given any consideration at
all by punters.
RUGBY
LEAGUE
Plenty
has been said on how open the 2012 NRL title is with $9.00 the field
given, but in the past week there has been a good push for the Brisbane
Broncos. The Broncos are on that $9.00 line of betting along with four
other sides, but it appears as though devout Broncos fans appear all will
be good without Darren Lockyer as they have attracted the most bets of any
of the others in the betting. The two biggest bets to date have only been
$2500 and $2000, but it is the constant stream of smaller bets (all from
Queensland) that show punters have complete faith in the squad.
Tattsbet has also opened up a market to win the 2012 Queensland Cup. While
it isn’t as open as the NRL, the equal favourites, Wynnum Manly and Tweed
Heads are the equal favourites at $4.50. It is worth noting that this year
it will be a final 5 as opposed to a final 6 last year, and ironically it
was Wynnum Manly who won last year from that position. Tweed Heads were
one of the surprise packets last year for two reasons. They didn’t lose a
game until round 22, then went on to struggle in the finals series,
ultimately losing the final to Wynnum. This particular competition is
gaining in popularity each year due to the amount of NRL players involved,
and betting will be available on all matches throughout the season.
TENNIS
Tattsbet are already experiencing massive interest ahead of tonight’s
blockbuster Australian Open semi-final between Roger Federer and Rafael
Nadal. While the number of bets are split down the middle, the big money
has so far come for Federer at as a $1.60 favourite (from $1.62). Nadal
($2.40 from $2.30) has a great record against his rival on outdoor
hardcourts so we expect late support for the Spaniard. Tattsbet will trade
the match LIVE in the run.
While
tournament favourite Novak Djokovic beat David Ferrer in straight sets in
last night’s quarter final, his apparent physical issues early in that
match has seen his title price drift from $1.90 to $2.25. He plays Scot
Andy Murray in a replay of last year’s final on Friday night. We think
Djokovic can put in a repeat performance int he semi and has been
accordingly priced up as a $1.42 favourite with Murray at $2.80.
RACING
Whilst
there is a host of racing coming up over the next few days (and nights),
it is the return of Black Caviar at Moonee Valley on Friday night that is
capturing all of the headlines. The unbeaten mare has been priced up at
$1.03 by the Tattsbet race bookies, and that is the shortest priced
favourite that we have ever seen in Australia since the inception of
pre-post betting. We have noticed that Black Caviar features prominently
in most of the cross code (horse racing/sports) multis for the weekend,
with punters taking the view that adding Black Caviar is a free hit. It
has also been surprising to not the huge number of bets around the $5 for
Black Caviar. While the winnings (15 cents) isn’t going to be life
changing for those punters, it would seem that they just want to be able
to say that they had a bet on the greatest sprinter we have ever seen.

The
fourth and final test between Australia and India gets under way in
Adelaide next Tuesday, and while India deserve to be $5.00 underdogs,
there are plenty out there who think they can restore some pride with a
win. India opened at $5.25, but a series of bets has seen that price cut
to $5.00 while Australia has drifted slightly in the betting from $1.67 to
$1.70. The draw ($3.50) has some admirers, probably because historically
the Adelaide pitch has been friendly to batsmen.
The Big
Bash League is fast coming to an end, and with finals spots yet to be
sorted, there is a staggering amount of interest in all games. Shane Warne
has done more than his fair share of work off the field to ensure the
success of the BBL, and his Melbourne Stars side go into Thursday night’s
crucial clash with Adelaide as warm $1.67 favourites. It has been
noticeable how many punters have been taking advantage of the fresh
betting after the toss has been done, and looking at the stats it isn’t
hard to work out why. The side batting first has won 66% of the games, and
that is in keeping with most twenty/20 matches around the world.
Surprisingly a lot of captains have chosen to field first instead of
batting, but the records suggest that if you stick with the side batting,
the odds are in your favour.
TENNIS
– AUSTRALIAN OPEN
The
Australian Open is well underway and after three days, honours between
Tattsbet and the punters are fairly even. Plenty of favourites have been
saluting but Sam Stosur’s exit has provided the biggest upset, going down
to Sorana Cirstea ($5.75). Tattsbet wrote one bet of $5,000 on Stosur at
$1.15 and she was anchored through many a multi. Petra Kvitova remains at
$3.75 to win the women’s title, just retaining favouritism ahead of Serena
Williams at $4.25.
Novak
Djokovic is the firming $2.15 title favourite on the men’s side, but one
Tattsbet client yesterday bet $5,000 at $4.50 on Roger Federer winning.
The Swiss maestro remains unchanged at that quote and faces a potential
fourth round match-up with Australia’s new darling of tennis Bernard
Tomic. But before that, Tomic has to get passed Ukrainian Alexandr
Dolgopolov in Friday’s third round encounter. Tomic will go in as a $1.65
favourite but all the early support has been for Dolgopolov at $2.20. Both
players possess similar styles of play and are not afraid to mix it up so
an entertaining match is on the cards.
Tattsbet are betting LIVE on the outright markets and selected matches
through the Australian Open.
AUSSIE
RULES
Tattsbet have opened Round 1 of the AFL, and the first match will see the
shortest round one favourite in history. The Swans are $1.01 to dispense
of their cross town rivals, GWS. The debutantes are $15.00 to create
history, and the proposed line option is creating a major talking point
amongst our bookies. Whatever they settle on, it will be a very high
number.
We are
tipping Fremantle to improve sharply this year under new coach Ross Lyon,
and we will all know exactly where they are at when they host Geelong. The
Cats are $1.72, and have attracted a few small bets at that quote, but
they are one of the best back sides to win back to back premierships.
Geelong are $5.00 second elects behind Collingwood ($4.00), with Hawthorn
($5.50) and Carlton ($8.00) next in line. Carlton are another side who
punters think will be hard to beat, with a couple of early four figure
bets on the Blues. GWS are easily the worst result for Tattsbet, with
several punters thinking the $251.00 on offer is attractive. It may be
nice odds, but looking at their list and their draw, it would require a
Stephen Bradbury like performance to worry the main contenders.
RUGBY
LEAGUE
Round 1
of the NRL is also open, and premiership favourites the Wests Tigers are
the shortest priced favourite for the round. The Tigers are $1.45 to beat
Cronulla ($2.75), with the line being set at 6.5 points. In a promoters
dream, Newcastle take on the Dragons in the very first match of the new
season, and the Knights have opened clear favourites at $1.58. The Dragons
are $2.35, and early betting would suggest they may start even longer. We
are all interested to see how the Broncos will go without Darren Lockyer,
and they have a tricky match first up against Parramatta. The Tattsbet
bookies cannot split the two, both quoted at $1.90.
As far
as premiership betting is concerned, the 2012 opening market is the most
open in history. The Tigers hold a slender hold on favouritism at $8.50
ahead of Brisbane, Manly, Melbourne, Newcastle and the Warriors, all at
$9.00. To show how open the market is, the outsiders (Canberra, Cronulla,
Gold Coast and Penrith) are listed at 26.00, and realistically there are
plenty of reasons why each of these could take the major trophy. The
Tigers are currently our worst result, with a bet of $5000 at $9.00
leading the way, while Brisbane and Melbourne have each had two bets of
$2000 placed on them at $9.00. There has also been some action on the
final 8 market, including bets of $5000 for Newcastle at $1.57 and $4000
for the Gold Coast Titans at $2.85.
ACADEMY
AWARDS
The
Golden Globe Awards have been handed out for this year, and that has seen
several major changes in the betting to win the Academy Awards.
George
Clooney (Descendants) was $1.90 prior to wining a Golden Globe, but is now
$1.45 to win the Best Actor Oscar. The critics, (and the public) love
Clooney, and should he win the upcoming BAFTA and/or SAGA best actor
category, then that price will firm drastically. Jean Dujardin (The
Artist) is clear second pick at $2.75, ahead of Leonardo DiCaprio
(J.Edgar) at $8.00 and Brad Pitt (Moneyball) at $13.00.
Betting
on the Best Actress Award has taken a similar path to the male version
with Meryl Streep now as short as $1.50 after winning a Golden Globe.
Streep, who has gained accolades for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in
The Iron Lady was $1.90 prior to Monday’s ceremony, and she remains as the
best backed in any of the categories covered. Michelle Williams
(Marilyn)and Viola Davis (The Help)are next in line at $3.25 and $4.00
respectively, but punters haven’t really warmed to either yet.

3rd Test
AUSTRALIA V INDIA
Tattsbet
punters have deserted the draw in the Perth Test beginning on Friday, and
who can argue with that? The draw has eased from $3.50 out to $5.00 at
Tattsbet with all the talk of a pitch that will suit the quicks, and the
Aussies have been big firmer’s in the betting. After opening at $1.85,
Australia is into $1.70, however with the price on the draw blowing like
the north wind, India have also come in slightly, now $3.50 after opening
at $3.75. With the live betting giving numerous trading opportunities in
the first two tests, it appears as though punters are backing either the
Aussies or India, hoping to bet around that when the match gets under way.
Sachin
Tendulkar is best backed to top the Indian first innings run total at
$4.25, while local hope Shaun Marsh ($5.50) and Ricky Ponting ($4.75) are
the two most popular Aussies. In our popular Player Runs Overs/Unders
market, Sachin Tendulkar has attracted a lot of support to get past 36
runs in the first innings ($1.87), and if he does surpass that total,
let’s hope he gets that 100th ton!
Tattsbet will
be LIVE throughout the Third Test.
BIG BASH
The inaugural
20/20 Big Bash has proved a massive hit with Tattsbet customers. Turnover
has been solid across all options including hi-bat’s and LIVE in the run
betting. Punters have been quick to pick up on the trend that has seen a
big majority (16-8) of the team batting first winning. This has made the
result of the toss most important. So just before each match, Tattsbet
bookies brace themselves for the frenzy of activity that occurs when the
result of the coin toss is known.
Chris Gayle’s
heroic’s with the bat for Sydney Thunder saw his price for top bat to as
low at $2.40 in last night’s clash with Perth Scorchers. It wasn’t to be
for punters however with Gayle controversially dismissed for 20 after
looking in ominous touch again. Perth’s fifth consecutive win guaranteed a
home semi-final and they find themselves a $3.25 title favourite with
Tattsbet.
The Brisbane
Heat have struggled all competition and are accordingly priced up as $2.20
outsiders against the Melbourne Renegades ($1.67) tonight.
TENNIS –
AUSTRALIAN OPEN
There is plenty
of uncertainty surrounding many of the top chances at this year’s
Australian Open which starts on Monday. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic
has been a well-supported favourite ($2.50 into $2.25) but Tattsbet
punters are jumping all over Brisbane International winner Andy Murray ($9
into $6) in the hope that the Scot can notch up his first Grand Slam win.
Meanwhile, injury and form concerns have seen punters steer clear of Roger
Federer ($4.50) and Rafael Nadal ($7). Perhaps not surprisingly, the
player to attract the most bets besides Murray is Queensland’s Bernard
Tomic. Sheer weight of money and the avoidance of a huge liability has
seen Tattsbet wind the Aussie in from $81 to $67.
On the women’s
side, Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova ($5 into $3) is set to start a clear
favourite and on her form so far in Sydney this week it’s not hard to see
why. Serena Williams ($2.50 out to $4.75) is friendless in the betting
after her withdrawal from Brisbane while Kim Clijsters has eased slightly
($8 out to $8.50) with her fitness concerns. And speaking of concerns,
Aussie hope Sam Stosor has been a massive drifter from $7 to $15 after her
horror start to the season. There is one punter who will be hoping
Brisbane form holds up after placing $10 on Kaia Kanepi winning the
Australian Open back in October at the odds of $501 (500/1). The Estonian
is now into $15 after collecting the silverware at Pat Rafter Arena.
RACING – MAGIC
MILLIONS
The Gold Coast
race track comes alive this week with the Magic Millions, and it would be
fair to say that while this looks a very tough race on paper, punters see
it much differently. Since Tuesday’s all important barrier draw, the Gai
Waterhouse trained Driefontein has been backed from $3.80 into $3.40, and
looks destined to firm even further. Gai has been quite vocal in her
confidence here, and that has been reflected in the betting, with several
four figure amounts coming for Driefontein. Queenslander Sizzling has been
displaced as favourite (now $3.60), but we continue to see plenty of
support at that quote, while third pick, Amorino attracted a bet of $3,300
at $7.00 on Thursday, and is now back in to $6.50. That was the first time
we had seen a good sized bet for the Gerald Ryan runner as the majority of
punters are happy to just stick with either of the two favourites.

SOCCER –
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
The Christmas-New Year period is always a busy time in the English Premier
League, and it’s fair to say that punters have come off second best this
year after a string of massive upsets. The short-priced favourites have
been going down left, right and centre, but that’s not to say that some
Tattsbet clients haven’t been taking the value:
Dec 31 - Blackburn ($26) def. Man Utd – 30 punters backed Blackburn
Jan 1 - Aston Villa ($12) def. Chelsea – 19 punters backed Aston Villa
Jan 2 - Sunderland ($5.85) def. Man City – 39 punters backed Sunderland
Jan 5 - Newcastle ($5) def. Man Utd – 29 punters backed Newcastle
Jan 5 - Bolton ($6.25) def. Everton – 24 punters backed Bolton
Tattsbet now have Manchester United out to $3.75 for the title after
backing up their New Year’s Eve loss to Blackburn with another defeat to
Newcastle this morning. That leaves the champions three points behind
fierce rivals Manchester City who are into $1.45. Tottenham ($9) are well
in commission now, breathing down Man Utd’s neck on the table with a game
in hand.
CRICKET – 2nd Test AUSTRALIA V INDIA
Tattsbet punters were on the money when they backed Michael Clarke to
notch up his triple-century today. He was $2.05 to reach the milestone
having sat on 251 overnight.
Pre-post activity on the 2nd Test largely saw Tattsbet clients
steer clear of Australia ($2.20), instead taking the $3.25 about India
bouncing back with what now appears a most unlikely SCG victory.
TENNIS – BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL
One Tattsbet client is riding their luck this week after placing $6,660 at
$2.15 on Andy Murray wining the Brisbane International. Murray has dropped
the opening set in each of his first two rounds, but now trades at just
$1.65 to collect the silverware on Sunday night. Murray is $1.28 to get
past Marcos Baghdatis ($3.60) on Friday. In the other quarter final,
Queensland’s own Bernard Tomic is $1.30 to defeat Russian Denis Istomin
($3.45).
There has been no shortage of drama on the Women’s side, with Sam Stosur
bowing out as a $1.10 favourite and Serena Williams succumbing to an ankle
injury. Tattsbet’s WTA analyst says its Kim Clijsters title to lose now,
with the Belgian trading at odds-on ahead of today’s quarter finals.
In Australian Open betting, Serena Williams’ injury doubt has seen her
drift to a $5 second favourite behind Petra Kvitova at $4. Kim Clijsters
sits on the third line of betting at $6.50 with Victoria Azarenka ($9) and
Sam Stosur ($9) rounding out the single-figure quotes. On the Men’s side,
world number one and defending champ Novak Djokovic is a clear top-pick at
$2.40 with Roger Federer at $3.50. Indifferent early season form has seen
Rafael Nadal ($3.25 out to $6.50) and Andy Murray ($6 out to $6.50) both
drifting.
