Sportingbet Roundup

Feels like we've had a week of footy and the results were probably best epitomised by the result of our footy tipping knockout competition. Hundred bucks in, forty-eight entries, eight left standing after the round. One punter had a three-day football odyssey, which may have provoked a few emotions. Four thousand at $6.85 on Essendon on Saturday night minus 26 1/2, into Brisbane minus 8 1/2 against the Swans into Monday's certainty Hawthorn -24 1/2. Saturday night he's out buying the kiddies the biggest Easter eggs going, Sunday arvo halftime he's eaten the lot as the Lions go in four down but get up safely for him so to make it up to the kids it's out for pizzas Sunday evening and a nice old nosh up until he sees the Hawks players out noshing up as well, they'd just read how much they were going to win by tomorrow and thought they'd get in early. The person who ever taught footballers to read has a lot to answer for. Half time Monday he is gone, three quarter time there is a god and by the end of the game he understands why they used to be called the Mayblooms. Gutsy bet which had us going for a while.

Richmond started things off status quo though; the punters skinned us with 10k at the 1.37, $8330 to win $3000 and a couple of 5k's at the 1.40 and the line. The pros were even sniping the Saints $9000 at the 3.00 should have bought a few drinks at the Moorabbin Disco as opposed to the dismal night listening to the drag racing in Lygon Street for the Carlton supporter who fancied $7500 at the $1.40 Blues. He didn't get the pre game whisper that they couldn't find a jumper to fit Lance and he was a non-starter. Fifteen thousand at the line (-19 1/2) Essendon was as bad as it got in a game where we couldn't lay the Pivotonians with a trowel but another 15000 at the 1.50 for the Essendon/ Port Power double had plenty of legs but ultimately Mick Jagger's no satisfaction after the Kangas' stirring win. Thanks to Jason Akermanis, Brisbane got ten thousand at the 1.65 past the post whilst Sydney, out from 2.25 to 2.35 copped eight grand at the late quote.

Something was happening up the top of Collins Street though. Plenty of the modern day equivalent of the Collins Street farmer wanted to be on their beloved Dees, which early saw them come from 4.25 to 3.50 and keep coming. The bum sniffers, courtesy of the Roosters opened the round positively for the joint when the unloved Broncos went from I.50 to I.75 and City attracted 20K at +6 I/2, 10k at +5 I/2 and 10k at an early 2.60. North Queensland similarly were a healthy whisper moving from 5. 50 to 3.50 in a performance which will possibly see a coaching replacement. Canterbury took our money, mainly at the win quote and spread around amongst the I.000's and 2,000's under the umbrella of 10k at I.53. And whoever taught the Wests to read? Not the three punters who took 5, 000 at the I.65 nor their mate with 5,000 at the line.

There is a very knowledgeable punter around Hong Kong way who refuses to bet on anything that can talk or read, though he has been seen to weaken at a Carlton/Footscray game after sufficient pre game lubrication, which is not his normal form. Fortunately he excludes jockeys from those who can talk, explaining that no one listens to them anyway. Thus he can bet on horses and does. Imagine what a big head Sunline would be if she could read. She'd be out dating Occy if he could read, catch up with Northerly occasionally if he could read and probably have her eye on a young up and comer, Don Eduardo, who's still got time to learn to read but connections would be reluctant. The punters loaded up on the great mare as she was forced in from 3.80 into 2.90. What a win. We might have muttered under our breath, but sometimes you just have to acknowledge great feats. Lee Freedman's efforts with the high priced Zabeel - Diamond Lover colt were also to be admired, taking him to Bendigo for his first win and a bit of know how confidence leading onto a nail biting, superlative staying effort in the AJC Derby. Not that the owner needed the dough, but there were quiet a few punters who closed one eye and leaned the right way on the line.

Since The Shark's demise you don't often hear a golfer tip him/her self/ One fellow heard something or felt it in his water trap with 600 each way Robert Allenby at the 34.00 in the Houston Open and Chris Dimarco was spotted at 500 x 500 at the 26.00. And the World Cup is starting to trickle in. Senegal's official language is French, but it is hard earned dollars, not francs, that have specked them with $100 at the $401 The Cup and $400 at the 34.00 to win Group A.

We took turns at being the bunnies at the weekend. Tonight's our real chance. Our feared Indoor Cricket Team 'Chumsters Chumps' returns for their second game against Darwin's finest after a disappointingly close 140 run loss last week. Several key players have been brought back in and two top line internationalists given the week off to think about their commitment and whether they are allowed out on Tuesday nights. We have not taken the opportunity to back ourselves at this stage.
