Weekend Wrap
Posted 3:15 PM, April 30, 2002

It was a glittering occasion at the first annual Sportingbet Gus Logie awards on the weekend and courtesy of some stunning makeovers, the turps was flowing freely for all sorts of reasons at the post punting bash. There were remnants of some formerly stunning frocks scattered around the result room and the odd missing glass slipper, which found a foot during the preceding four days. The Golden Index Award went to its annual recipient who despite being an avid Carlton supporter put aside rivalries in the true spirit of Anzac Day to invest fifty bucks at plus 29 Collingwood, $200 Collingwood at 5.00 and a thousand at the 1.90 with the unneeded 32= start. He was still singing The Reveille when he snuck in another $80 on the Hawks on Saturday at a mix between plus three and square. 'The Gus' sits proudly on his desk with a wad of around the $8310 mark. Take out the $1000 at the line and he got it for lolly money again. Runner up from Sleepy Hollow way was $25 at minus 17= Geelong for $1125 in the kick. What fun it must be down there at the moment with so many young local boys involved. Our early season tip off from a well-versed local client/coach re James Bartel for the Norwich Rising Star Award is sitting on some fertile eggs after his BOG performance in the Number 3 guernsey.

But Anzac Day did dampen the spirits of a couple of clients who hoped to be in contention for a few more days, notably a fifteen thousand investment with Essendon kicking off a treble into Sydney and Port Adelaide at 1.91 and 16670/3000 the Bombers. They may well have felt like the first two on the beach at Gallipoli, blazing the way for the backup troops who somehow managed to twice snavvle $3000 at the 5.50 The Black and White and two days later the officers arrived with $2000 Hawthorn over 39= points at the heavy artillery 6.50. There was little confidence for the Tigers when it was unofficially confirmed nation-wide that Richo would not be playing and their midfield is playing like it is developing a midriff. Hawthorn was the biggest manoeuvre of the weekend firming from 2.15 to 1.90 matchtime.

Punters were reeling by sleepytime Saturday, having used Brisbane as an anchor for their multis and just had to watch the rest go round, including a seeming nest egg of 15k a Brisbane /Sydney double which was scrambled before the night game kicked off. Though Saturday evening would have been a wild ride and not much sleep for a punter who invested $60 on the West Coast/St.Kilda double at 31.00, the draw limiting his return to $870, but still good skill and finance for a few weeks more entertainment and fossicking. The second week running we awarded the 'Einstein' logie. Fifteen hundred dollars Kangaroos under 39=, Wests Tigers over 12= and the Canterbury Bulldogs to win at a cumulative 8.23 followed up with a fellow Kangaroos sympathiser's 25,000 at 1.65 the win against the injury plagued Blues. Interesting to know the financial incentive of Carlton's move to Colonial, the football department has given indication that the trading of a profound home ground advantage at Optus, for the moola from Collo to play 'basketball' has not been well embraced.

The Broncos/ Newcastle game was our biggest betting event participation wise and 20k for the Knights to break a 15 year hoodoo had enough mates to make Brisbane our preferred option. That letter to the Canberra players reportedly sent out last week must have been held up in Australia Post, or else they struggled to read the fine print. Ten thousand Parramatta at the 1.90 minus 18= might have been the errant postman. John Lang has been vociferous about the treatment of his high stepping son Martin, a punter who lashed out with 15k at the 1.20 The Panthers at home might be making up his own charge sheet.

The 'Youch!' award and we all felt it. Twenty thousand minus 10= Warriors against Melbourne. Margin 10 points. There was also plenty of line money for the Waratahs at home against the Hurricanes which stayed in our kick and The Brumbies result continued the 'Be kind to a Bookie' trend of the weekend. The 'just about snuck it through award'. Fifteen hundred at the 7.48 Wests Tigers/Canterbury/Geelong/Carlton. Not only was it three legs of the quaddy, but somehow a gremlin entered it as winner. Gets tricky then. Who's going to send it back? Thank goodness for our checkers and double checkers and the couple of lines of infantry after that, but maybe indicative of the topsy turvy football weekend for punters. Brownlow wise, things did not appear to get better, with one client investing $200 x $200 Kane Johnson at 151.00 only to see him leave the ground with a 'hammy.' Good news is it is not as bad as first thought and that thought continues for the unevenness of competition. Something is happening, just a matter of knowing when.
