Betting Wrap

Round 3 of the AFL saw a fairly even weekend of betting with only one real "shorty" being Hawthorn over Fremantle at York Park in Tasmania, although the punters who took the $1.30 the Hawks really had to sweat for their money. Carlton were well supported late in the betting in the Friday night game at the MCG, after the punters got wind of the late withdrawal of Magpies forward, Chris Tarrant. Some of the bigger punters certainly have a very good spy network.

The match of the round between the Lions and the Bombers was a spirited betting affair with the early money on Monday forcing Brisbane's price in from the opening line of $1.65 to $1.60 with Essendon easing slightly to $2.20. Punters then continued to back both sides right up until game start and we did not have to make another adjustment as the hold on the game went up past the $200,000 mark.

Port Adelaide were easily the best backed side of the weekend and punters rushed the $1.50 opening price and just kept "putting it on" until we reached $1.22 the Power, with St.Kilda easing dramatically to $3.75. It was easily the biggest plunge of the season and even a late bet of $10,000 on the Saints at a quote of $3.75 hardly eased the pain for TABSportsbet as punters linked Port up in all the doubles and trebles plus the pick 4 and anything else that they could get their teeth into.
One of the two "outsiders to win, Geelong, gave an astute punter a nice result with a wager of $15,000 at $2.80 followed up by $6,000 at $2.75 for a total win of $37,500.

Premiership and Brownlow betting was once again very consistent last week with one Queensland punter jumping in with a $7,000 bet as soon as we opened flag betting with Brisbane at $3.00 after their demolition of the Hawks. They got in to $2.80 for the rest of the week and are now at $2.25 after their effortless win over the Bombers on Saturday night. At the other end of the scale a Western Bulldogs optimist obviously thought that they would knock over the Eagles on Sunday as he invested $500 on the Doggies for Premiers on Friday at $101 for a win of $50,000 if the biggest turn around in AFL history occurs. Punters are continually specking the roughies in the Brownlow Medal and last week was no exception with one punter having $700 each way on Geelong's Stephen King at $126 to win nearly $110,000 if the big cat gets the award. Another customer foresees back to back medals for the lions in the form of Nigel Lappin and has invested $500 on the midfielder at a quote of $101.

One punter will have to reassess his tipping form after betting $1,000 on the pick 4, Collingwood-Melbourne-Sydney-Kangaroos at a quote of $17.00. I believe that is four picks for none right, sir.

Punters on the NRL had a field day at TABSportsbet with both the Newcastle Knights and the N.Z. Warriors in particular being heavily backed. One punter had no worries about collecting as he invested $18,000 on NZ Warriors at the line (-10.5 pts) at $1.80 for a profit of $14,400 as the Warriors belted the hapless Eagles 68 to 10. The North Queensland Cowboys were also quite well supported with one customer punting $13,000 at $2.25 for a nice win of $16,250.

The U.S. Masters result was a pleasant bonus for us with Tiger Woods not really backed to any great extent throughout the tournament even though we led the betting on the defending champion for most of the event. He opened at $3.50 and we quickly had him out to $3.75 and then were first to $4.00 when it became obvious that the punters were backing plenty of players to beat him at Augusta this year. Even on the last day we were top odds in the land at $1.70 but the lack of money for the champ enabled us to show a healthy profit of $30,000 as Tiger cruised to victory over the final 9 holes. Retief Goosen and Australia's Adam Scott were very heavily backed pre-tournament with the South African coming in from $18.00 to $11.00 and the young Aussie from $71.00 to $35.00 including one bet of $600 each-way at $41.00. We easily surpassed last year's hold of $139,000 on the event with turnover in excess of $225,000 this year.

Turnover on the soccer in both the FA Cup matches and our NSL finals was slightly disappointing although in fairness both Arsenal and Chelsea were short-priced favourites in their respective semi-finals. The FA Cup final is on Saturday May 4 and Arsenal is a $1.50 favourite to take the cup for the eighth time in the history of this proud club.

In racing we bet on both Sydney Cup and the W.A. Derby with spirited betting on both races and better than predicted turnover. Good size Sydney Cup bets included $6,000 on the favourite, Pentastic at $6.00, $2,000 on Armstrong at $13.00, $800 on Mr Nelson at $31.00, $500 e/w on Karasi at $31.00, $500 on Mr.Prudent at $23.00, $1,000 on Dress Circle at $14.00 and $1000 e/w on Spirit of Westbury at a quote of $11,00. The Derby also had its fair share of good wagers with $3,000 on Storm Fille at $6.50, $2,500 on Honor Lap at $7.00, $1,000 on Fortune Streak at $21.00 and $800 on Lakeside Song also at a quote of $21.00.

So as you can see we had another big week at TABSportsbet and continued our increase in both turnover and revenue.
