Betting Wrap
The Friday night match at Colonial Stadium between Essendon and Adelaide saw a big Adelaide plunge go astray. The Crows were backed early in the week from $3.80 in to $3.20 (including one bet of $8,000 at $3.50) and further support on Friday saw them get to a quote of $3.00, which gave the Bomber fans a chance to get on at the "good odds" of $1.33. One brave Crows punter was still happy to back them at quarter time when they were 25 points down and invested $3,000 at their price of $6.00. The luckiest and unluckiest were, not surprisingly, both from the Swans v Kangaroos game. A Sydney fan had $12,000 on his team at $1.55 early in the week and then buttered up again on Saturday with a bet of $4,470 on the Swans under 39.5 points at $3.25. Darren Creswell's after the siren goal for Sydney's 3 point win gave our punter a collect of $29,104, but left a Kangaroos supporter lamenting what could have been with his bet of $15,000 head to head on the Kangas at $2.80. With Sydney's joy went his collect of $42,000. The Port Adelaide v Carlton match on Sunday at Football Park saw one of the bigger bets of the season go down with the Power's 53 point defeat of Carlton. One of our big betting telephone punters invested $20,000 on the Blues at a quote of $4.25 for a potential win of $65,000, however his hopes were dashed with Port Adelaide's 8 goal to 2 third quarter. The best backed favourite of the round was certainly Geelong who shortened from their opening quote of $1.50 to run a solid $1.33 by game start. The Cats punters never had a moments worry and there was little wonder that we could not lay the Saints as they crashed to a 122 point defeat at the hands of the young pussies. Premiership betting was quiet this week, however one punter did invest $1,000 at $13.00 on the Brisbane - Richmond Grand Final Quinella on Friday only to see the Tigers go down by 10 goals to Freo on Sunday. Brownlow betting sees Magpie skipper, Nathan Buckley become outright favourite for the first time this year at a quote of $7.00 courtesy of a best on ground performance against the Hawks, together with suspension of third favourite Andrew McLeod at the tribunal on Monday night. Once again last week we saw the specking of players at long odds with punters settling on Shannon Grant from the Kangaroos ($700 at $71 to win $49,000) and Essendon's Jason Johnson ($300 at $61 to win $18,000) as the roughies for the week. Round 6 of the NRL saw six of the seven favourites salute with good money for Melbourne Storm, coming in from $1.72 to $1.60 (including a bet of $12,000 at the $1.72) and the Bulldogs who tightened from $1.80 to $1.65. One Penrith punter was able to make a few dollars even though Penrith lost when he invested $10,000 on the Panthers at the line of +12.5 points. The score line of Brisbane 30 to Penrith 26 saw him easily get the cash at the $2.20 on offer for a handy profit of $12,000. The hi-low double punter who invested $25.00 on North Queensland scoring the highest and the Newcastle Knights scoring the lowest at a quote of 1000/1 was a long way off beam with the Cowboys struggling to 12 points while the Knights 52 points on Friday night. In other sports, significant bets for the week saw $5,000 invested on the ACT Brumbies to win the Super 12's Championship at a quote of $3.35 only to see them promptly beaten 19 to 11 by the NSW Waratahs on Sunday, The fixed odds betting on the
Stradbroke Handicap has generated terrific interest with one of the
bigger bets being $1,300 on Pernod at a quote of $26.00 to win $32,000. And finally, one of our golf punters would have been feeling warm and fuzzy when Heath Slocum went to one shot lead after 15 holes in the final round of the Worldcom Classic in the USA. The punter had placed $200 each way on Slocum at $81.00 pre tournament and looked likely to pocket a handy $20,000 if the tour rookie could hold on, but Heath promptly double bogied 16 to gone down by one shot to Justin Leonard. Unfortunately our "poor" punter will have to do with a conciliation collect of $4,000.
