AFL Wrap
AFL WEEK 4 Once again the punters got the better of the bookies in the AFL betting with Round 4 producing seven winning favourites and even the non-favourite, Geelong, were much better supported than their opponents Melbourne. The Cats came in from $2.10 to a quote of $1.95 whilst the Demons were easy in the market drifting from $1.65 out to $1.75 and looking at the insipid performance by the “Dees” the punters knew exactly what they were doing. Punters also knew what they were doing in the “top of the table” clash between Brisbane and Collingwood at the Gabba on Thursday night. Lions fans backed the premiership favourites from $1.35 to $1.30 despite the Pies being unbeaten in their first three outings of the season and they also got it right in the Tri-bet with an investment of $4,000 at $3.65 for either team to win under 15.5 points. Collingwood’s Chris Tarrant reduced the margin from 20 points to 14 points with a goal right on the siren. Another punter showed astute judgement investing $2,500 on the half time/full time double of Collingwood/Brisbane and collected a tidy $13,750 when the Pies led by 9 points at half time and the Lions powered home to win comfortably at the final siren. Hawthorn were easily the best-supported side of the round being backed in from their opening quote of $1.72 to run a solid $1.50 chance by the time the ball was bounced. One Sydney punter helped our cause a little with a bet of $15,000 on the Swans at $2.55 but saw his cash drift away with Sydney’s second half fade out. Although there was not a lot of action in the Essendon – Western Bulldogs game the Bombers did firm slightly from $1.55 to $1.50 and were very well backed in the multiple bet types and once again we were grateful for a “Doggies” bet of $15,000 at $2.40. Adelaide were generally regarded as the best bet of the round and punters responded accordingly with the Crows firming from $1.28 to run a heavily backed $1.20 chance by game start. The Eagles easing to $4.00 was too much for one West Coast fan and he invested $12,000 on John Worsfold’s boys and although they were gallant in defeat that is not much consolation when you have just dropped twelve large. Carlton were very well tried to make it two wins in a row for the season with bets of $10,000, $6,000 and $8,000 however Port Adelaide easily brushed the Blue Boys aside which actually enabled us to win on a favourite. Premiership betting was a little quiet last week with punters trying to work out if anyone but the Mighty Lions can take out this year’s flag. The Brownlow Medal betting continues to jog along nicely and once again I have some “novel” medal bets for you to absorb. Someone thought Jared Brennan’s performance in his first game for Brisbane put him right in Brownlow contention and invested $20.00 on the 18 year old at a quote of $1001. Tiger David Roden is certainly an improved player on last year but putting $100 on him at $251 to win the Brownlow may be going a tad too far, whilst betting $45.00 on Rod Crowe (Rod who?) from the Kangas at $1001 would seem ambitious to say the least. A couple of good bets in the NRL this weekend saw one punter $18,000 better off, with a bet of $10,000 on Manly at $1.80, as the Sea Eagles finally shook off a dogged Melbourne Storm to win 18 points to 12. Another punter took the line of + 10.5 points in backing StGeorge Illawarra for $8,000 at a quote of $2.10 however he didn’t actually require the “start” as the Dragons ran out easy 10 point winners over the disappointing Canterbury Bulldogs at Telstra Stadium. The only sizeable bet in this weekends European soccer was a client who was happy to take pretty short odds about Man United getting over Blackburn Rovers with a wager of $20,000 at $1.30 as he helped himself to a $6,000 profit when the Red Devils cruised to a 2 nil victory. Racing in Sydney at the weekend rounded
off the Slipper- Doncaster and Derby-Doncaster doubles which were both
very successful in turnover and profit. A couple of punters were also
happy with the outcome with one having $20.00 on the Polar Success –
Grand Armee double at $615 to collect $12,300 whilst another invested
$100 on Clangalang winning the Derby and Grand Armee the Doncaster at a
quote of $135. The best pre post bet on the Doncaster winner was $500 at
$41.00 late in March.
