Weekend Preview
Posted 5:45 PM, April 7, 2004

The week the golf world waits all year for has arrived and this year looks like the best chance an Australian has ever had of winning the coveted US Masters. Several Australians are in top form while a number of the usual suspects are struggling a little. The market is reflecting this with the Australians amongst the best backed players.

Adam Scott is in hot form and showed he is ready to win his first major with a breakthrough victory in the “fifth major”, The Players Championship, two weeks ago. He has been the biggest shortener in the market, having been backed with Sportingbet Australia at $81 to win $50,000 and has had support all the way in to his current quote of $21. Stuart Appleby, Craig Parry and Robert Allenby have also been well supported with Allenby and Parry both been backed to win over $40,000 with Sportingbet at $67 and $101 respectively.

Away from the Australians, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have been the best backed amongst the favourites. All three have attracted a number of bets between $1000 and $3000. Ernie Els has been backed in from $13 to $11 as consistent money kept coming for the big South African. Mickelson fans have not given up on the American left hander despite failing to win a major when close on a number of occasions. Tiger Woods is the best price he has been to win a major for a long time and while he has had steady support, the usual weight of money is yet to come for the World No.1.

The best backed roughie has clearly been former champion Jose Maria Olazabal who has been backed to win over $80,000 with Sportingbet and has shortened in from $201 to $67 as a result. Olazabal has performed superbly at Augusta over the years and punters were not put off by missing the $201 as the money continued to come at the $151 and $101. Americans Jerry Kelly and Jonathan Byrd have both been backed to win $60,000 at $126 and $201 respectively.

The Easter long weekend is serving up a host of top sport and racing for the sports fans and punters alike. The weekend kicks off with the Grand Final replay between Collingwood and Brisbane and all the money at Sportingbet Australia has been for the Lions to continue their domination over the Magpies.

The US Masters will be kicking off as many of us will be returning from the pub on Thursday night and if the money is right, the Aussies will be in the thick of the action. Adam Scott has been the best supported player with Sportingbet Australia while Robert Allenby and Craig Parry have had also at friends at a big price. Ernie Els has been backed into $11 while former champion Jose Maria Olazabal has been sensationally backed from $201 into $67 with Sportingbet Australia.

This weekends League action should be a cracker with the Broncos taking on the Roosters in a blockbuster on Good Friday. There is also a full round of Super 12 action with a number of teams facing must win encounters if they are to feature in the finals.

All this sports action is also book ending a superb weekend of racing in Sydney. There has been substantial betting interest in both the Doncaster and AJC Derby. The money came early in the week for Grand Armee in the Doncaster but it has drifted since drawing poorly. The two best backed runners with Sportingbet Australia have been favourite Private Steer and roughie Kablammo. The money has come at various stages for the three main hopes in the Derby with Niello, Special Harmony and Starcraft all having been backed at different stages. The smart late money has come for Starcraft this week after his easy victory last Saturday.

AFL

The Lions are the clear favourite for Thursday nights Grand Final replay with Collingwood and despite the short odds, the Lions are the only team punters want to back. The Lions are raging $1.22 favourites with Sportingbet Australia who have reported a number of $5000 and $10,000 on the Lions. Collingwood have been unloved at $4.50 at this stage but being runners-up last year, money should come for the Magpies at that price.

The market was a lot closer in the decider last year and despite the Lions’ comprehensive victory last year and a shaky start to the season by Collingwood, the market probably doesn’t reflect how close the game is likely to be. Sportingbet Australia are currently offering a line of 29.5 at $1.90 and Collingwood will be fired to show they are not yesterday’s men. Collingwood must be in with a good chance of covering the line if they are to prove they are to contenders again this year.

Sportingbet Australia has also reported heavy support for Lions as the first leg in many Multis for the weekend. They have been coupled up with the Swans, Fremantle and Port Adelaide in many multiples with Sportingbet as punters try to fatten up their price.
