Spring Carnival Update
Now that the nominations are out, many clients of Michael Eskander are trying to find the value runners in the three feature races. Both small and large each way bets have been laid against horses at big odds to win the Caulfield Cup. The most notable was a bet to win $100,000 on Irish Crusader in the Caulfield Cup, who ran on pleasingly first up at Sandown on Saturday. Pinstripe has also been backed by some astute New Zealand clients, who obviously believe he will go on to bigger and better things. The most interesting runner that has had support would be the Brian Mayfield Smith trained Dane River in the Caulfield Cup. Some may remember this galloper looking far better than average before he broke down when seemingly coming in to his own in the Spring of last year. Apart from Lonhro being ever popular in the Cox Plate, the first trail of money has arrived for Moon Ballad. This grand Godolphin galloper (winner of the Dubai World Cup) has been backed to win $20,000 by one client, along with coupling it with his stable mate Beekeeper to win $40,000 in the Melbourne Cup. Moon Ballad is now in to $15 and will shorten dramatically if it is confirmed he will be making the trip. The Melbourne Cup sees punters shying away from the Australians, and coming for the New Zealand and other International runners. As always, Bodie, Honor Babe and Oarsman are very popular, along with Distinctly Secret who was the subject of strong support last week. Mr American Gothic is still the best backed, with clients continually coupling him with Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup runners to win large sums. Hugs Dancer and Flownaway are the “spruik horses” of the week, with every second client coupling them in doubles and win only bets - forcing Michael Eskander to shorten his odds from $81 to $51 for Flownaway to win the Melbourne Cup.
