Round 18 of the AFL gave us the most one sided batch of games for the year, with the only “results” being the Western Bulldogs over Melbourne and St Kilda’s thrashing of West Coast. We could not believe the amount of money for Melbourne as they came in from $1.47 to $1.35 with the Bulldogs getting out to an amazing $2.90. One punter with some idea of value invested $4,000 on the Dogs at the $2.90 for a collect of $11,600. Another favourite that was heavily backed was Fremantle ($1.20 to $1.16) against Richmond, however the real big money came out at half-time with a punter having $32,000 on the Dockers at a quote of $1.11. Plenty of people gave Geelong some chance against Collingwood and although the Magpies were solidly backed from $1.25 to $1.12, we found a couple of Cats supporters. $5.25 head to head was too much for one Geelong follower who forked out $20,000 for a possible collect of $105,000. A more astute Cats punter invested $24,000 (at $2.25) on Geelong at the line of +25.5 points and collected $54,000 when they battled out the game to lose by only 24 points. Punters quickly forgave Brisbane for last week’s 1 point loss to Port Adelaide at the Gabba and a flood of money forced their price from $1.18 to $1.12 including one bet of $66,000 at $1.14. Adelaide was also all the rage against Sydney and shortened from $1.22 to $1.18, partly due to a bet of $40,000 at $1.20. St Kilda was one of the best-backed “roughies”, at one stage shortening from $2.90 in to $2.70 head to head. One punter in fact went all out, investing $1,000 on St Kilda over 39.5 points at a quote of $12.000 and never had any real worries as the Saints ran out 61 point winners. You certainly have to feel for one punter on the weekend who linked the two outsiders, Hawthorn and St Kilda, in a Sunday double for $2,000 at $12.00 only to see his $22,000 profit disappear as Byron Pickett snapped a goal in the last 90 seconds to give the Power victory over the gallant Hawks. In Premiership betting punters decided that last week was the right time to back the Lions and back them they did. $2,000 at $5.00, $10,000 at $5.00 and then $7,500 at $4.50 and $5,000 at $4.50. A quinella punter has sussed out the finals scenario and come up with Adelaide and Collingwood playing off. If that is correct he will win $13,000 after investing $1,000 on that combination at a quote of $14.00. Once again Brownlow betting has been smaller investments at the big returns, the most notable being $100 on 2000 medallist Shane Woewodin at a quote of $301 to win $30,000. Sydney Roosters and Parramatta Eels were the two teams that NRL punters latched on to last weekend. Roosters’ punters had to wait until the dying minutes before they could count their money as Sydney got over the Raiders 20 points to 16. Punters who bet $10,000 at $1.30, $15,000 at $1.30 and $10,000 at $1.25 would have very short fingernails by match end. The Eels fans backed them from $1.38 to $1.25 including two bets of $10,000 at $1.35, and they too had to fight hard for their 21-18 victory over Wests Tigers. The Tri-nations match between Australia and South Africa saw Rugby Union punters support the Wallabies whole-heartedly and they shortened from $1.35 to $1.28 by game start. Biggest bet was $20,000 on Australia at $1.35 for a painless collect of $27,000 as the Aussies won comfortably 29 points to 9.
