Racing (and the Red Hots)

We're thinking of sending in the UN Arms Inspectors to a few punters bunkers. One bloke kept lobbing short priced hand grenades, oblivious to the fact that bookies like to celebrate Christmas too. Got in early, Thursday at Redcliffe, with ten nicker on two $1.20 pops, Red Star Rebel and Who Said What which both saluted and then lined up Friday night at Harold Park with a neat 20K on Lombo La Fe Fe at the gulp!1.10 for a $2,000 return. He rose early Saturday and chucked another 10,000 at the Gold Coast on Murphy's Blu Boy in race one at $1.30 who won by a lazy 6 lengths. Hard to get with a pick and shovel unless you work in the Mint.

But hang on, it wasn't down tools yet! There was another $12,000 invested on Princess Clang at $2.00 in winning the sixth at Eagle Farm clocking the fastest last 600 metres of the day. End result, $62,000 invested for a profit of $21,000 over 48 hours. Slightly better than bank, but you'd need better judgement and nerves too.

David Hall trained a treble at Sandown, nearly a 'tre'm'ble' we reckon. Early on one good judge claimed the joint for 15,000 at best price $6.00 on For The Good Times and the matching bookend in the last was $12,000 at a best $4.00 for the well owned Kali Smytzer, who the Gauch reckons could turn into something 'if someone can get it to settle." We could teach it something about settling Darren, send it up.

Couple of good plonks went astray. Total of $45,000 on the Expat's nose wasn't helped by finishing third and 50/25,000 Danbird in Sydney got the best of the odds but not the result. Same fella had a 'Swing and Mist' with 11,000 on the race six favourite at Canberra and another near miss on Green Pick which finished 2nd in R4 at Sandown with little luck in running on Lisa Meech's return to city riding. Couple of mentions in stewards reports make it one to keep an eye on. Scott Seamer delivered for one punter when Awesome Night got home at 4.80 in the 6th at Eagle Farm carrying ten large for a $38,000 result. There was a fair bit of dodging and weaving going on, but at the end of the day no fatalities

Cricket

Luckily Ronnie Irani provided something different at the first One Day International. His Big Merv impersonations took us all back down memory lane and so did the three standout punters who came for the Aussies with confident $10,000 wagers each at $1.18 for a bit more than pocket money. They just keep putting up and taking the pud. The Poms have copped a bit of shellacking for their training schedule with the mix up of the One Dayers and Tests leaving some squad in Perth whilst the others travel.

NHL

Punters are starting to hook into 'Dizzy on Ice' and one fella had a very mixed bag, missing out with six grand on the New York Islanders at the 1.91 to win, following up with a $4,980 result on the Edmonton Oilers at 1.83, cheering the Philadelphia Flyers home at 1.91 for another $5,460 to put the snozz in front from a little Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday parlay.

NBA

The game totals came to the fore this week, maybe we noticed them more because of the way the results went. The pick of the punters went for a straight game total in the Lakers game of over 204 Straight investing $5,500 for a return of $5005 and the very next day buttered up with the second half game total in the Dallas Mavericks game of under 97.5 for a similar collect at the 1.91.

AFL

‘Pick a Vic ‘has proved popular amongst Carlton fans since the list got settled and they’ve all got volunteer jobs down at Princes Park. Don’t thing Denis Pagan’s been downgraded to volunteer yet, but a few other Christmas stockings have taken a trim. All good character building stuff the Blues supporters reckon and there’s been a lot of muttering and trickles of action when they se that board and see the Magpies as $2.40 favourites to be the top Victorian team including finals and the Blues at $31.00. Remember they meet in the first round of the ‘nine point goal cup’ this year and the tip is get on the Blues.
