FROM ESKANDER RACING

Press Release
Posted 3:00 PM, July 3, 2003

Since we broke with tradition and released Caulfield and Melbourne Cup markets in the second week of May, clients of the Michael Eskander office have hardly been shy about backing their early fancies! As is usually the case, horses who perform well in their Autumn assignments are most prominent in early doubles, and Lee Freedman's exciting stayer Mummify is a case in point; Michael now stands to lose more than $1M if the son of Jeune can complete the Cups double. We have slashed the price of Mummify/Mummify from $251 to $101 in response to continual support. A more obscure, but no less prolific Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double has coupled the promising Rhythm (USA) three year old Bounty Beat with Auckland Cup winner Bodie for a seven figure result. Bodie, incidentally, has been sensationally backed in both Cups, but punters must now take $41 after we initially bet $101.

The Robert Smerdon trained Alberato may only boast a string of provincial wins, but the smart money suggests that he will return a real force in the Spring. We've laid the Alberato/Alberato double to lose $400,000, and taken two bets of $40,000 to $500 in the Caulfield Cup. Another lightly raced stayer to attract Caulfield Cup support is the John O'Shea trained Lazzaz, we made him a $51 chance after one of our best clients had $1000EW at his opening price of $81. Queensland Derby winner Half Hennessy has been coupled with Melbourne Cup hopes Bodie ($200,000 to $150), Lowlander ($220,000 to $300) and Media Puzzle ($100,000 to $340).

Three horses have dominated Melbourne Cup betting over the past fortnight. 2002 winner Media Puzzle is certain to visit again, according to his trainer Dermot Weld, and has been popular in doubles with CC chances like Half Hennessy, Grand Armee and Republic Lass. He is now outright favourite and well supported at $13. Interestingly, his stablemate Lowlander has also met with overwhelming support. This may be the 'Dermot Weld Factor' at work, but bets of $1000 at $41, and $1,500 at $34 cannot be ignored! Kiwi stayer Oarsman, runner up to Bodie in this year's Auckland Cup, clearly has a large following on both sides of the Tasman. In the Melbourne Cup he's been supported from $67 into $26 including bets of $16,000 to $400 and $16,500 to $500 each way. Oarsman has been coupled with Caulfield Cup hopefuls like Honor Babe ($330,000 to $500), Magical Miss ($165,000 to $300) and Etoile Du Nord ($100,000 to $50). The other interesting medium of support is Our American Gothic, an imported stayer bought by clients of the Michael Moroney stable. He hasn't attracted a lot of doubles business, but wagers of $60,000 to $1,500 and $34,000 to $1,000 make him a big loser in the Each-Way book.

We look forward now to the official entries for both races on August 1, Michael Eskander's comprehensive Cup markets will follow thereafter.
