Sports Wrap
Big week of betting on the AFL with plenty of money about after the weeks break and most of it went back to the punters with 7 favourites getting to the line. It all started with the Friday night game where the punters let loose on Essendon to beat Geelong and backed the Bombers from $1.60 in to $1.40. With all the money for Essendon, Geelong eased dramatically in the betting and it was too much for one of our biggest clients when the Cats got to $2.80. He let go with bets of $25,000 at $2.80 head to head, $30,000 at the line (+14.5 points) at $2.00 and $2,000 over 39.5 points at $13.00. With the Cats going down by 36 points none of the big collects eventuated but there were certainly plenty of winners on the Bombers. Melbourne were quite well supported to take advantage of the week off and beat St.Kilda and shortened from $2.40 to $2.20. Once again St.Kilda, who eased from $1.50 out to $1.60, confirmed that punters should tread warily when the Saints run out as odds-on favourites. Another good betting game at the weekend was the Collingwood – Western Bulldogs game at the Dome on Saturday night. The Pies had their usual solid support from their fans and without any really big bets, got in from $1.48 opening price to start at $1.38. At one stage the Bulldogs got out to $3.00 but a bet of $20,000 saw them come back in and they were $2.80 at match time. It was all one way traffic at the Gabba with punters only wanting the Lions who shortened from $1.20 to $1.13 over the course of betting, including one bet of $30,000 at $1.16 on Saturday. Richmond had few friends in the betting and eased from $4.00 to $5.25. The tightest betting game of the round was down at York Park in Tassie, where Hawthorn ($1.80) took on Fremantle ($1.90) in pretty atrocious conditions. Punters had a slight leaning to the Dockers on the day and by the start of the match we could not separate them and gave the punters $1.85 each of two. At Subiaco the betting was much the same as the Gabba with the home side having all the support and the visitors friendless in the market. West Coast were backed from $1.25 to $1.18 with a series of medium sized bets whilst the Kangas eased to $4.25 however the Eagles backers had to work a lot harder to get their money than Lions supporters up North. The last of the games in round 13 saw another favourite, Adelaide, shorten dramatically with us as they were backed in from $1.52 to run at a quote of $1.40. We eventually found a Carlton punter late at $2.75 with a bet of $20,000 but by that time the damage had been done. A couple of good bets on the Flag last week with punters backing two teams that got the 4 points at the weekend - $2,000 on the Magpies at $12.00 and $1,000 on the Bombers at $31.00 A quinella punter has left flag favourites, Brisbane, out of his calculations and invested $1,000 on Port Adelaide and West Coast to play off at a quote of $10.00. Someone decided that $301 was too good a quote to pass over for a former Brownlow Medalist and invested $70 each-way on Shane Woewodin for a win of $26,250. State of Origin 2 was a very solid betting affair with all the early money being for Queensland at $2.40 and as they got into $2.20 we had to push the Blues out to $1.60 and that is when the big boys stepped up to the plate. $25,000 and $20,000 at the $1.60 head to head, plus $12,000 at the line of – 4.5 points and with a lead of 17 points to nil at half time the New South Wales punters never had a moments worry. Two of the bigger NRL bets for the weekend went down with $12,000 head to head on Sydney Roosters at $1.95 missing out when the Broncos just got home 10 points to 8 and a similar winning margin saw a bet of $15,000 on Canterbury Bulldogs at $1.85 go astray as the Panthers accounted for the Doggies 28-26. Nice bet during the week of $6,000 on the Bulldogs at a quote of $6.00 to take out the 2003 premiership. Wimbledon betting has been excellent in the matches, the men’s championship and the championship double but disappointing in the women’s title. Good bets last week to win the title included wagers of $1,000 on Sjeng Shalken at $41.00, $1,000 on Sebastien Grosjean at $41.00, $500 on Juan Carlos Ferrero at $31.00 and $800 on Mark Philippoussis at $18.00. One of the bigger bets on the Championship double didn’t last long with a punter putting $500 on the “love double” of Hewitt and Cljisters at $28.00 – so much for love. As stated the betting has been very keen in the head to head matches with a couple of the larger wagers being $15,000 on Radek Stepanek at $1.40 against Scott Draper for a collect of $21,000 and $20,000 on Wesley Moodie from South Africa at $1.50 in his victory over Fredric Niemeyer to pocket a neat $30,000. Racing moved from the city to the country in Queensland with the running of the Ipswich Cup meeting on Saturday however it didn’t deter the punters from getting involved. The Eyeliner Stakes and the Ipswich Cup were the feature races on which we operated and we held some good money on the Eyeliner including one bet of $1,500 on Treviscay at $13.00 whilst the Cup attracted bets of $4,000 each-way on Another Warrior at $4.00 and $8,000 on the favourite and second placegetter Mon Mekki, at a quote of $3.25.
