Although six favourites got to the line in AFL Round 14, the bookmanagers (and Geelong) did a magnificent job to come up with a highly profitable weekend for TABSportsbet.

As usual Essendon played a Friday night game and as usual the early part of the week saw plenty of money for the Bombers as they shortened from $1.35 to $1.33 with StKilda getting out to $3.00. There was however an air of confidence from the Saints punters and some good solid betting at $3.00 saw the bookmanagers have to go back to the original price of $2.90. The Fremantle – Brisbane match was a great betting game with plenty of money for both sides. One Lions punter invested $20,000 on the reigning premiers at $1.57 and must have thought he was “home” at three quarter time only to see the Dockers kick 4 goals 7 behinds to Brisbane’s 1 goal 3 behinds for a 3 point win to Freo. In the same game, the punter who had $20,000 on Fremantle at the line of + 11.5 points would have enjoyed the last quarter as he looked forward to his $39,000 collect. For the second week in a row Collingwood were heavily backed, coming in from $1.60 to $1.40 with very little support for the Kangas. Another game where it was one way traffic in the betting was at AAMI Stadium where Adelaide were backed from $1.22 to $1.16 as they beat the Tigers by 28 points. That margin was very important for one Adelaide fan who had $10,000 on the Crows at the line of -27.5 points so a possible ten grand loss became a $18,500 collect at the final siren. West Coast’s loss of Michael Gardiner before the match certainly helped those punters who backed Sydney from $1.65 to $1.50 as the Swans just held on by 8 points. The big result of the weekend for TABSportsbet was Geelong’s last gasp win over Port Adelaide down at Skilled Stadium. The Power were backed as if there was no tomorrow and came in from their opening quote of $1.35 to run at the very skinny quote of $1.18, including one bet of $19,000 at $1.20. Although one astute (and lucky) punter had $15,000 on the Cats at $4.20 the payout of $63,000 was a long way from the amount that would have gone from TABSportsbet coffers if the 1point result had gone the other way.

Premiership betting saw some good wagers with $2,000 on Collingwood at $12.00, $1,000 on Sydney at $23.00 and $500 on Richmond (yes Richmond) at $101. There was also a Grand Final Quinella of $1300 on Adelaide and Port Adelaide playing off in September at a quote of $10,00. Biggest Brownlow Medal bet of the week was on the Crow’s dual Norm Smith Medallist, Andrew McLeod at $17.00.

NRL betting was steady without being spectacular although one punter cleverly combined the Dragons with Essendon in a Friday night cross code double and turned his $10,000 investment into a $31,000 collect as StGoerge/Illawara had a comfortable 16 point win over Brisbane Broncos and Essendon thumped StKilda by 68 points.

Tennis betting saw record holds for the Men’s Championship and the Championship Double with a slight decrease in the turnover for the Women’s Title. The holds were well up in the betting on matches and other exotics however the yield was down on last year. A couple of bigger head to head bets during the tournament were $30,000 on Roddick at $1.20 when he beat Srichaphan and $25,000 on Federer at $1.35 when he was too good for Schalken. Bigger bets to win the Men’s Championship were $1,000 on Sebastien Grosjean at $41, $1,000 on Sjeng Schalken at $41.00, $2,000 on Tim Henman at $18.00 and $4,000 on Federer at a quote of $4.00.

With the commitment we had for Philippoussis for the title were able to bet up on Federer in the match itself, and bet up we did, with bets of $25,000 at $1.62, $30,000 at $1.62, $30,000 at $1.60 and $35,000 at $1.60.

Racing at the weekend saw fixed odds betting in three states, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia with the big betting certainly on the Caloundra Cup at the Sunshine Coast. Punters had a splurge on the cup with bets of $4,000 on the favourite Belus at $4.50, $2,000 each-way on Sir Kindle at $9.00, $1,000 each-way on Republic at $26.00 and $3,000 each-way on the winner Raw Instinct at $9.00 for a nice win of $30,000.
