Sports Wrap
Once again a mixed bag for AFL punters at the weekend with 5 favourites winning, a well backed Essendon and two less fancied sides in St.Kilda and the Western Bulldogs. Although Collingwood were well supported early in the week, coming in from $1.18 to $1.16 there was, surprisingly, plenty of money for Richmond on Friday and they got back from $4.50 to $4.25. Pity those punters didn’t get some sort of run for their money. Although Sydney were heavily backed ($1.30 to $1.15) favourites against Carlton at Optus Oval we fortunately found a punter who wanted to be on the Blues at a quote of $4.85 for $10,000 and this enabled us to get out of the match unscathed. Although Brisbane were backed early in the week, once Essendon had a bit of luck at the tribunal and good “ins” at the selection table, the betting turned around and the Bombers firmed from $2.70 to $2.20 to give us a nasty result. One punter went the whole hog on the Dons with a wager of $1,500 on them to win over 39.5 points at $8.50. The Kangaroos were another favourite that was heavily backed, coming from $1.45 to $1.38 and would have had their supporters cringing as the Saints banged on 10 goals in the first quarter. And one St.Kilda punter had a roller coaster ride with his bet of $15,000 on the Sainters at $3.00 to win $30,000 as they went from “certainties” to “gone” and finally back to winners. One of our cleverer clients at the weekend found the St.Kilda - West Coast Hi-Low double at the good odds of $255 and for a $50.00 outlay collected a healthy $12,750. No real big betting on the Premiership last week although we did find someone with far too much money who invested $90 on Geelong to win the Flag at $1250. Thanks for the donation. What would you do if you had a spare thousand dollars? Put it on Richmond for the Final 8 at $31.00? No one would be that silly would they? The answer – YES. Biggest Brownlow Medal bet for the week was $1,000 on Brisbane’s Nigel Lappin at $51 NRL betting was steady if not spectacular with the biggest bet of the weekend being $20,000 on the Knights to beat the Panthers at $1.72 but with Penrith keeping the Knights scoreless in the second half the Panthers ran out easy winners 29 points to 16. A punter has had a dip at the Brisbane Broncos- West Coast cross code Premiership double with a bet of $500 at the quote of $30.00 for a possible collect of $15,000. A Cricket punter brightened up our day when he decided that $1.04 Australia was good odds (and he was right) in their match against Bangladesh in Darwin and duly walked off two and a half days later with a $840 profit. The British Open was naturally a nice result for us with the unknown American, Ben Curtis at an opening quote of $251, holding on in a dramatic finish. Bigger bets for the tournament were; Kenny Perry $600 at $81.00 to win $48,000 Mike Weir $1,000 each-way at $26.00 to win $31,500 Rich Beem $300 each-way at $101.00 to win $37,500 Alastair Forsyth $300.00 at $151 to win $45,000 Nick Price $1,000 at $35.00 to win $34,000 Ernie Els $1,000 at $26.00 (after rd 1) to win $25,000 Thomas Bjorn $400.00 each-way at $41.00 to win $20,000 Plenty of good bets but not many winners.
******MEDIA RELEASE******MEDIA RELEASE****** FLAG FAVOURITES DETHRONED Brisbane has finally lost its mantle as AFL Premiership favourites at TABSportsbet for the first time since July last year. Once again Port Adelaide have pushed the Lions from the top of the Premiership market as the Power come in to $3.00 after their emphatic demolition of West Coast at the weekend. Alternatively Brisbane’s 8 point defeat at the hands of Essendon at Telstra Dome on Saturday night has seen their flag quote ease from $3.20 to $3.75 after now recording four losses from their last six games. Collingwood has moved to the third line of betting at $6.00 although the price has more to do with weight of money than assessment of their Premiership chance. West Coast’s comprehensive loss to Port Adelaide and the Crows narrow defeat by Fremantle at Subiaco on the weekend sees the Eagles ease from $6.00 to $7.00 and Adelaide go from $6.25 to $7.50. Although Sydney sits second on the ladder with only six games remaining they are not rated in the five top Premiership chances with TABSportsbet and are at a quote of $14.00 for the 2003 Flag. Essendon’s win over Brisbane has put them back on track for September action and they have had their price reduced from $41.00 to $21.00. Although recent wins over Brisbane and Adelaide at Subiaco should ensure that Fremantle play in this years finals, punters and bookmakers alike give them little hope of taking the 2003 pennant and they are rated a $51.00 chance.
