Big week for punters on the AFL with round 17 producing six winning favourites plus two equal favourites – Brisbane $2.00 to $1.85 and Richmond $1.90 to $1.85. So punters should have plenty of ammunition for this week’s battle. West Coast heavily backed from $1.22 ton $1.16 and ran away from Hawthorn in the second half to score easily by 56 points. The punter who had $2,500 on Hawthorn at $4.50 would not have enjoyed the Hawk’s goalless second half. The Essendon – Melbourne game stirred up some good betting with one Demon’s fan investing $15,000 on the “Dees” when they got out to $3.60. An Essendon punter tried to get some value out of the Dons by having $15,000 on them at $1.80 at the line of –23.5 points however their 17 point victory was not enough for him to collect his $27,000. Kangaroos were best backed in the match against Geelong at Manuka Oval, Canberra on Saturday getting in from $1.38 to $1.30. The Cats eased out to $3.20 at which price we took a bet of $15,000 head to head to win $33,000 however that losing bet was negated with a bet of $15,000 at $2.00 on the line of + 18.5 points. With the margin 4 points in favour of the Kangas at ¾ time the Cats managed to hold on for our punter, going down by 18 points and giving him a collect of $30,000 by half a point. Although Port Adelaide shortened from $2.00 to $1.85 against Brisbane it was such a great betting match that no damage was done in the wash-up. All three favourites shortened in the betting on Sunday with Sydney being $1.30 to $1.25. Adelaide $1.18 to $1.09 (and a horrible result) and Collingwood $1.10 to $1.09 over the hapless Blues. In Premiership betting the only noteworthy transactions were by poor deluded souls who backed St.Kilda with bets of $50.00 at $1001, $40.00 at $1001 and $150 at $701. Biggest liability this week in Brownlow betting was an investment of $70.00 on Hawthorn’s Adrian Cox at a quote of $1001 for a highly improbable collect of $70,000. Plenty of action on the Grand Final Quinella with some interesting investments. One customer has had $400 at a quote $60.00 on the Essendon – West Coast combination whilst a Collingwood punter linked the Pies up in Grand Final Quinellas with Sydney ($600 at $35.00), Essendon ($400 at $50) and Port Adelaide ($3,000 at $6.00). Rugby League betting saw one of the biggest plunges for some time come off when Wests Tigers easily took care of Newcastle Knights at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday. Wests were backed from $2.80 to $2.00 at TABSportsbet including one bet of $5,000 at $2.80 and they didn’t miss us with the line betting either coming in from $1.85 to $1.45 at the line of + 8.5 points. One punter had $15,000 on the line at $1.80 and really didn’t need the start of 8.5 points as the Tigers demolished the Knights 52 points to 12. One punter had a crack at the “first try scorer” in the Broncos-Sea Eagles and the Eels-Dragons matches with mixed results. $3,000 on “any other player” at $4.25 in both games saw him have a win in the Eels game and a loss in the Broncos match however a $6,000 outlay for a $12,750 return is not too shabby. Solid Support for Australia against New Zealand in the League Test on Saturday night including one bet of $20,000 on the Kangaroos at $1.35 for a stress-free collect of $27,000 as Australia cruised to a 48-6 victory. Tennis still attracting plenty of big bets and one of the bigger ones was certainly an investment of $36,000 on Andy Roddick at $1.18 when he beat Paradon Srichaphan. Fixed Return Racing punters continue to bet up into our racing product with one astute client investing $2,000 on the Dermody Stakes-Tatts Mile double of Dantana and St Basil at $8.50 for a nice win of $15,000.
POWER GET THE POINTS, BRISBANE GET THE DOLLARS Although Port Adelaide are sitting pretty on top of the AFL ladder and are now clear cut favourites for the 2003 Flag at $2.90 it has been Brisbane that has attracted the big money in Premiership betting this week at TABSportsbet. After losing five of their past seven matches, the Lions had gone from hot favourites at $2.35 to share the second line of betting with Collingwood at $5.00, however it was too much for one Brisbane fan who invested $10,000 at that quote to win $40,000 if the Lions can threepeat. Brisbane have now been wound back to $4.50 to be second favourites on their own with the Maggies, who continue to have huge support to go one better than last year, third in the betting. West Coast, who are eyeing second spot on the ladder, are well in the mix at $6.25 whilst Adelaide continue to have support at $7.00. Sydney, although in second spot on the ladder, is only sixth fancy for the flag at TABSportsbet at $12.00. CURRENT AFL PREMIERSHIP BETTING Port Adelaide $2.90 Brisbane $4.50 Collingwood $5.00 West Coast $6.25 Adelaide $7.00 Sydney $12.00 Essendon $21.00
