PUNTERS LIKE LIONS AND LAPPIN

The Brisbane Lions for Premiers and Nigel Lappin for the Brownlow Medal is what bookmakers and punters are saying after the completion of round 14 of the AFL season at the weekend. With losses to St.Kilda, Melbourne, Geelong and Essendon over weekend Brisbane have shortened to nearly “flip of the coin” odds at TABSportsbet to take the 2004 AFL Flag. After getting out to $3.20 some weeks back when St.Kilda were at their rampaging best, the Lions are now clear-cut favourites at $2.05 to make it four in a row.

The Saints form slump in winning only one of their last four matches has seen them not only lose favouritism to the Lions but slip to third pick in the betting behind Port Adelaide. The Power are now at $5.00 and second favourites after a punter invested $5,000 on Mark Williams boys at $5.50 earlier in the week thereby creating a small move in the betting and leaving St.Kilda alone on the third line at $5.50.

Melbourne’s march up the betting market was abruptly halted with their 12 goal loss to Adelaide and they have eased from $7.50 out to $9.00 whilst Geelong’s narrow defeat at the hands of West Coast has meant a turn from $12.00 to $14.00 for the young Cats. The biggest drifter after round 14 has been Essendon, who have eased from $15.00 out to $18.00 as they struggle to arrest a three-game losing streak after getting in to third pick in the Flag betting at $7.00 after round 11

Our new Brownlow favourite is Lions midfielder Nigel Lappin at a quote of $6.00 from Fremantle’s Paul Hasleby, young Eagle Chris Judd and Adelaide Crows captain Mark Ricciuto, all at $8.00. One astute punter placed $3,000 on the Brisbane ball magnet at $9.00 just before the start of the round on Friday and Lappin did his part with a near best on ground performance against Richmond on Saturday night. Mid-season favourite James Hird has slumped out of contention at present and has eased to $13.00 whilst the big shortener over the last two weeks has been 2000 runner-up Scott West, who has come in from $31.00 to be right in the mix at $13.00.
