HILLS APPLAUD ARREST OF RUSSIAN BLACKMAILERS William Hill today welcomes the news that key members of the Russian gang involved in the world wide blackmail and extortion of online sportsbooks were identified and arrested yesterday. Although Hills only suffered minimal inconvenience with just one DOS (Denial of Service) attack in March this year, it is a huge sigh of relief for all UK bookmakers as the threat from this gang of highly organised criminals has been removed. The DOS attacks worked by bombarding the sportsbooks servers with thousands of messages, disprupting the service, then the gang would send blackmail demands, threatening to continue the attacks unless a ransom was paid. David Hood, spokesman for William Hill said, "We have been working closely with the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit and its International counterparts to provide as much information and help as we can, and we applaud the efforts of everyone who was involved in this operation. Fortunately we only suffered minimal financial loss of business from the one attack launched on us, and none in terms of the ransom payouts. From the onset of the threats in October 2003 we began investing in software to prevent any potential disruption and reduce the effectiveness of any attacks, however arresting these criminals and removing their threat is the ultimate resolution to the matter."
