FROM SPORTING ODDS

England v Denmark
Posted 6:10 PM, June 13, 2002

Despite their dire draw with Nigeria in their final group match, Sven and his Three Lions go roaring on in the Far East. Can they withstand a Danish onslaught to claim their place in the Quarter-Finals?

Recent matches between England and Scandinavian sides have been tightly fought encounters and with both defences performing solidly during the group stages, this Second Round tie is likely to go to the wire. Sven's back four in particular seems to be getting better and better as the tournament goes on and in Rio Ferdinand they have a player who is maturing in leaps and bounds on the international scene. While some may attack England's rather drab showing against the 'Super Eagles', their impressive display against Argentina will linger longer in the memory and showed that when necessary they can turn the screw.

Finishing top of Group F would have been the icing on the cake for England, but one good aspect about finishing second and playing on Saturday is that they will be kicking off in the evening. With just 75 hours separating the Nigerian and Danish games, cooler conditions will be welcomed with open arms.

While defending world champions, France, were fancied to claim the top spot in Group A, it was the cool, calm and collected Danes who took that honour (with France finishing plum bottom). Jon Dahl Tomasson has been the star of the show for Denmark, netting four times in three games. The 25 year old striker has grown in stature since his lean spell at Newcastle five years ago and is in a rich vein of form after a fantastic season with Feyenoord.
