FROM ESKANDER RACING

Press Release
Posted 3:45 PM, June 20, 2003

Michael Eskander Racing has a new $15 equal favourite for the 2003 Melbourne Cup after highly rated Mr.Dinos demoralised his rivals in the Ascot Gold Cup overnight. The 4 year old son of Irish Derby winner Desert King (IRE) settled just off a steady pace, set by evergreen stayer Persian Punch, before taking the lead 800 metres from home. He extended under strong riding from the furlong pole to record a brilliant 6 length win for champion rider Kieran Fallon, Persian Punch held on for second, and Pole Star was three quarters of a length away in third. Mr Dinos was backed from 7/2 into 3/1 after opening a 5/2 favourite in the 2 mile 4 furlong feature. The going was rated good to firm. Godolphin's representative and favourite, Mamool, failed to stay and was beaten 8 lengths into 5th place.

Winning trainer Paul Cole travelled to Australia in 1998, preparing the previously unknown galloper Yorkshire to an unlucky 5th behind Jezabeel in the Melbourne Cup of that year. Interestingly, the trainer of Pole Star is James Fanshawe whose horse Travelmate ran fourth to Rogan Josh in our Cup of 1999. Pole Star is rated a $34 chance in both Cups.

With Queensland's Winter Racing Carnival in it's twilight, and Victorian Racing in the midst of it's jumps season, clients of the Michael Eskander office are already contemplating our charts for Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup/Cox Plate and Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup doubles.

Since releasing our markets on May 13th, punters have shown a willingness to back the horses that performed well in their autumn assignments. S.A Derby winner Mummify has clearly captured the public imagination; his supporters already stand to win more than $800,000 if he can complete the Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double. Penny Gem & The Jewel only filled minor placings in the Queensland Oaks, but punters feel they will both train on as four year olds and make their presence felt in the Spring.

Kiwi stayer Zafar impressed with a series of hollow victories over the summer months, one of our better known clients has coupled him with Caulfield Cup favourite Shower Of Roses in a double bet of $450,000 to $1,500. Fellow New Zealanders Oarsman and Bodie have attracted substantial support in both Doubles and Each-Way betting. Oarsman stands to lose us $1.5M in various multiples, whilst Bodie, who is $101 into $81 and shortening, is all the rage with our smaller punters, attracting dozens of individual bets over the past few days! NZ Derby hero St Reims failed to flatter in his Sydney campaign, but one loyal supporter has wagered $660,000 to $1000, that he will turn it all around and land the Cups double.

In the W.S Cox Plate, we marked WFA star Northerly a $7 favourite, but sheer weight of money has forced us to bring him in a point to $6. Even with the race four months away, punters have great faith in his ability to return as a seven year old. Stradbroke Handicap winner Private Steer has also met with support. We laid one bet of $45,000 to $1,500 prior to her Eagle Farm triumph, she is now rated a $15 chance. Biggest Cox Plate double couples the rising star Grand Armee with Zafar in the Melbourne Cup for a collect of $450,000.
