AFL WEEK 10 WRAP

Interesting betting round in the AFL saw 5 favourites get to the line (two of them at a very short quote) with the other 3 winners, although not favourites, being right in the market in their respective games.

Although Port Adelaide were very heavily backed ($1.50 to $1.38) to take revenge on Collingwood on Friday night at AAMI Stadium the Pies still had their supporters on the punt with one bet of $10,000 at $2.90 head to head whilst another fan was even more optimistic investing $1,500 at $12.00 for the Maggies to win over 39.5 points.

Carlton were surprisingly well tried to topple Fremantle at Subiaco and shortened from $6.00 to $4.50 with a series of solid bets on Saturday morning however by game time Freo were back to their opening quote of $1.12 per medium of some odd bet amounts. At $1.18 we had consecutive bets of $8845 and $9045 – ah well, each to their own. The Geelong –Adelaide game at Skilled Stadium saw plenty of money for both sides including a bet of $15,000 on the Cats at $2.30 head to head. You have to feel for one Geelong punter who had $20,000 on his pussies with a start of 9.5 points at $1.85 for a collect of $37,000 only to see a lead of 3 points half way through the last quarter disappear into a 17 point loss. One Essendon punter must have had a nervous time before collecting his early bet of $20,000 at $2.10 when he found out that Hird and Fletcher were not selected in the original side, whilst Misiti and Peverill were late withdrawals.

Not much action this week in the Flag or Brownlow betting bar for a bet of $100 on West Coast’s Phil Matera at a quote of $501 to win $50,000. Found one Carlton punter with a sense of humour who has somehow got the notion that Lance Whitnall can win the Coleman Medal and has put down $40 at $301 to try and win $12,000. Not Likely.

One Queensland punter has obviously backed up his parochialism with money, with a bet of $1500 at a quote of $10.00 that the two Brisbanes will win both the AFL and NRL Grand Finals.

A couple of the bigger bets in the NRL got the cash this week starting with $9,000 on the Canberra Raiders at $2.20 to beat the Cronulla Sharks on Friday night. A 20 points to 14 win by the Raiders saw our punter pocket $10,800 profit. The second punter took on the might of the Broncos at home with a bet of $4,500 on the Knights at a quote of $3.20 and watched his Newcastle boys cruise to a 10 point victory and allow him to collect $14,400.

The final of the Champions League between Juventus and A C Milan was a great betting game with turnover close to $400,000 on the match. At 90 minutes the game was a nil all draw and one astute punter was all smiles with a bet of $1,500 on that result in the Exact Score option, at a quote of $9.00 for a win of $12,000.

Tennis in the form of the French Open has been the spotlight sport this week with betting up some 11% on last years event. Andre Agassi was the best backed in the Men’s Draw whilst Serena Williams has always been an odds on favourite to take out the Women’s title. Some of the more significant bets during the tournament have been;

$5,000 on Juan Carlos Ferrero to win the Mens at $4.00

$400 on the Championship double of Coria and Clijsters at $50

$20,000 H to H on Moya to beat Philippoussis at $1.25

$25,000 H to H on Clement to beat Coutelot at $1.45

The Brisbane Carnival is drawing to a close with the running of the Stradbroke Handicap and the Brisbane Cup over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Money continues to come for the fancied candidates in the Stradbroke including bets of $2,000 on Gordo at $11.00 and $1,000 on Into The Night at a quote of $21. Zagalia, winner of the Queensland Oaks last Saturday was the medium of an Australian wide betting plunge, coming in from $101 early doors to at one stage hit $17.00 before easing out to start at $26. Punters did not miss us on the way with one client claiming TABSportsbet for $400 at $41 to win $16,000 as the filly survived a protest from the short priced favourite, The Jewel.

More of the French Open next week and a wrap of the AFL as we reach the halfway mark of the 2003 Season.
