AFL WEEK 12 WRAP As we head for the mid-season break the bookies no doubt won the battle of round 12 with four favourites biting the dust. Essendon punters went absolutely crazy on Friday night and backed the Bombers from $1.80 in to a quote of $1.48 in one of the biggest goes for the season. There was a little bit of money for the Kangaroos late (and so there should have been when they got out to the ridiculous quote of $2.50) including one bet of $15,000 in the line bet (line + 5.5 points) at $2.20 to win $18,000. Richmond was also well backed early in the week, starting with a bet of $15,000 at $1.45 before they settled at $1.35 for the remainder of the week. Friday however saw a couple of solid bets on the Blues with $12,000 on them head to head at $2.90 and $12,000 at the line (+19.5 points) at $1.85. Another team that punters put their faith in was Port Adelaide at York Park against St.Kilda where they were backed from $1.33 to $1.20 and with very little support for the Saints they got from $3.00 to $4.00. There were 3 bets of $10,000 on the Power and those punters were never in danger of losing their cash. Fremantle were a little easy in the betting and Geelong got in from $4.00 to $3.50 ($5,000 at $3.50) and although the Cats went down they gave their backers a good sight. Another of the outsiders to get some monitory attention were the Western Bulldogs who were trimmed from $3.80 to $3.20 with a steady run of medium sized bets saying the “doggies” could repeat last year’s performance at the SCG – but alas no such luck. Both the Brisbane ($1.30) verses West Coast ($3.20) game and the Adelaide ($1.20) verses Melbourne ($4.00) contest had no odds changes for the entire week. The final game for the round between Collingwood and Hawthorn at the MCG ended a fairly ordinary weekend for punters when the solidly backed Magpies who had come in from $1.38 to $1.35 put in a shocker against the Hawks. There were three reasonable sized Premiership bets last week but only one of those punters would be happy with the outcome of the weekend’s matches. The punter who invested $9,000 on Port Adelaide at $4.00 would have liked what he saw, however the $1,500 on the Magpies at $8.50 and the $500 on the Bombers at $21.00 may have been better invested on another bet type. Brownlow betting has been very quiet with punters playing a wait and see game to see how many games Michael Voss is likely to miss. A couple of bigger bets over the weekend at NRL level – one successful – one not. A $20,000 bet on the Sharks at $1.33 must have given that punter a few grey hairs as Cronulla fell over the line by 2 points against Wests Tigers however the punter who backed Newcastle for $15,000 at $1.85 giving a start of 8.5 points against St.George Illawarra was never really in the hunt. Racing heads are now turned to the west where the WATC carnival commenced last Saturday with the running of the Gr 3 Belmont Sprint and the Listed Belmont Guineas. Betting was very solid and indicated that the better races over the next few weeks should attract good business. Biggest of the bets on Saturday was $4,000 each-way on Guineas contender Mapperholic at a quote of $4.00. Mid-Season AFL Comparisons
