HOWZAT! THE AUSSIES HEAD FOR SW17............. AND NOT FOR THE TENNIS!

Twelve months on from Lleyton Hewitt plundering the coffers of the All England Club and with yesterday's victory at Royal Ascot by Aussie trained Choisir, the sporting world is bracing itself for another invasion from Down Under .........for the dogs!.

When 28th June rolls around, the bookies will be holding on to their satchels as a pair of sports mad Aussie brothers descend on the 'Don for the Final of the William Hill Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon Stadium, Plough Lane.

Heading for town from Adelaide are 28 year old accountant Rohan Whiting and his brother Julian (22 yrs), with the sole intention of making the whole trip pay with a punt on the dogs.

Rohan commented, "My brother Julian and I have enthusiasm for many sports. Be it the football (both yours and ours), cricket, tennis and racing, whether it is cars, bikes, horses or dogs. We are heading to Europe in late June / early July for the Tour de France starting in Paris, but when I read my London travel book, I saw that the Greyhound Derby Final happened to coincide with our visit, so I knew we had to come and bought the Derby final tickets over the Internet.

For several years I have gone to the local dog track with a few mates, to our equivalent of the William Hill Greyhound Derby - the Adelaide Cup, held in January. A few years ago there was a greyhound aptly named after cricket player Brett Lee who won the Adelaide Cup final over a 515 metre distance in 28.88 seconds! And yes, I had a few dollars on him that night.

This will be my second visit to London and My brother Julian's first. Tennis was contemplated as we are both big fans of our local ace and last year's winner Lleyton Hewitt. Actually going to the tennis appears very unlikely because of the difficulty getting tickets, but we're more than pleased just to follow the action on the BBC in the correct time zone!"

David Hood, Head Of Public Relations for the sponsors William Hill commented, " It's fantastic that the special appeal of the Greyhound Derby Final is now recognised all over the world. It's an incredible atmosphere on the night and I wouldn't be surprised if the famous 'Derby Roar' wakes them up down under! Having spoken with Rohan, I look forward to welcoming him on the night and the next step for the sport must be to get an Aussie runner over here in the near future."
