FOOTBALL

The countdown is on and we have had one of our busiest weeks ever at Centrebet as we lead into the World Cup kick-off on Friday night.

Each and every market has been bombarded with bets from around the world and the 1-1 draw by the Socceroos against Holland was also good for business. Aussie punters have been keen to take the 81.00 on offer for Australia and this week alone the Socceroos have been backed to win over $200,000 with us. Brazil have eased from 3.25 out to 3.50 as support comes for most countries but we have taken two more $10,000 bets for Brazil this week at the new price.

Some of the bigger bets taken in the last week include two of $2000 on the Czech Republic at 31.00, $5000 on England at 8.50, $6000 on Italy at 11.00, $1500 on Serbia and Montenegro at 91.00 and $1000 on the USA at 101.00. We have also notice a huge surge from Swedish clients for Sweden to win and we have been forced to cut that price from 41.00 into 34.00.

The top goal scorer market has been nearly as popular as the Cup betting itself with dozens of players backed to win big amounts. Ronaldo has been backed to win close to $200,000 already and remains favourite at 10.00 but Thierry Henry has been backed to win a similar amount and is now a solid 11.00 second choice.

Centrebet will be offering over 50 individual markets on each of the World Cup matches. We will also be betting live throughout each match and there will be a new set of markets that deal with the second-half only opening at the major break. Odds to win the Cup as well as some of the qualifying options and top goal scorer will re-open at the conclusion of each days play.

Our tip? We are happy to stick with the host nation Germany with the best outsider being Portugal.

RUGBY LEAGUE

NRL punters and tipsters had a big weekend when all seven favourites won. Most of them were narrow victories but that was all that was required.

Plenty has been written about the bizarre ending to Friday night’s clash between the Dragons and the Eels but what about the person who had a $65,000 multi with Centrebet for a payout of $237,000? He had Adelaide in the AFL to win by more than 40 points (they won by 138) into St George Illawarra to win by six points or more. For 79 minutes and 48 seconds he was in trouble but the last 12 seconds of that match will live in at least one punters memory forever!

The Roosters looked much better but didn't win, when the Storm beat them by four points on Saturday. Melbourne were hot favourites, but failed to beat the eight point handicap they were allocated. We did have a good win on the Bulldogs even though they started slight public elects after a solid push came for Newcastle. Joey Johns was right when he said both he and the team need a rest, as they faded badly in the second half.

Finally, the Tigers are back in town and although still just outside the eight, it won't be long before they are in there. The Cowboys continue their form slump and with Origin continuing to disrupt them for at least the next month, we can probably expect the trend of punters betting against the Cowboys to continue.

It's back to trying to second guess how sides will perform without their Origin stars in the upcoming round of NRL.

For those who are keen to rush in and bet without putting too much thought into it, be very careful as many clubs have some big names out. How else would you explain Souths being only 2.20 against the Broncos? Strangely enough, I know that we have barred ourselves from tipping Souths but they get a real chance to get on the board this week.

In another close betting match, Parramatta has been allocated slight favoritism over Melbourne. Both sides have suffered with Origin call-up, or injuries, but in our opinion, the Eels are also under the odds and we will be taking them on. Melbourne has been very good at covering player losses, and the Eels would have been bitterly disappointed with last week's loss. Their season is probably on the line at the moment but it is the Storm for us.

AUSTRALIAN RULES

There can be no excuses for any punter or tipster who didn't fare well at the weekend.

All eight favourites won and with all seven winning in the NRL as well, it was a black weekend for bookies. There were several teams who were down for the count but came back to win and that only added more salt to the wounds of the bagmen.

The Sydney Swans went into the last quarter well down and kicking into a breeze, and as they were the best backed of the Sunday favourites, we thought the Kangaroos would do us a big favour. It wasn't to be as Barry Hall lifted the Sydney team over the line and they are now into 5.50 to make it back to back flags.

Adelaide had little more than an exercise gallop against Essendon, who look real wooden spoon contenders at the moment. Geelong surrendered a 54 point lead to the Eagles and although the Cats went in as slight outsiders to win at 2.05, they were 1.06 at three quarter time. Nobody took that price but there was big money for them at half time when 1.12.

The Bulldogs were another well backed side who looked in trouble early in the game but ended up having a 21 point win.

Punters will be well armed with cash following last week's round and they have already shown their hands this week with plenty being placed on most opening favourites.

Geelong is in a big form slump, but so are Essendon and the Cats go in as one of the best backed sides of the round. They were beaten last week but surely a side that was nine goals up against the West Coast should be able to beat lowly Essendon?

Adelaide is now outright favourites for the flag and while they have always faced a daunting task traveling to the Gabba, most punters think they will beat Brisbane this week. The Crows have suffered some real beltings in Queensland and have lost on five of their last six trips north, but the Lions are clearly not the side of yesteryear.

St Kilda is in strife and the Swans all the rage, which is how the betting is going in Saturday night's clash in Sydney. The Swans opened at 1.40 but are already into 1.37 as punters make them the 'anchor' bet of the round.

CRICKET

I know the Aussie cricket season is a long way off but we couldn't let the week pass without mentioning England's loss to Sri Lanka.

The Poms were on their home turf when they drew the series 1-1 and are yet to win a series since winning the Ashes. Added to their woes is a possible long term injury to Andrew Flintoff and all doesn't look so rosy for when they come to Australia to defend the Ashes.

When betting opened after the Ashes, England were backed from 4.00 into 3.25 but now there is no sign at all of even the most ardent English fan as the odds have blown out to 4.50. Recently we have taken two $10,000 bets for Australia to regain what is rightfully ours, those bets coming at 1.45 before we shortened them to 1.40.

MOTOR BIKES

While Valentino Rossi failed to qualify quickest in last weekend's Italian MotoGP, it didn't stop him from recording his fifth successive win in his home GP.

Punters threw in for a big win on Rossi and were prepared to take 1.65 even though he drew number three on the grid. Two of the biggest bets were €5000, both coming from his homeland of Italy. It was an intriguing race as Rossi had to battle a late challenge from Loris Capirossi, who started second favourite at 5.00. Capirossi was virtually unwanted at that price but was heavily backed to finish on the podium. We took bets totaling $5000 at 2.25 before qualifying, then a similar amount after he drew two on the grid at 1.65.

BIG BROTHER

The money was right again when Jade and Dino were evicted from the Big Brother household on Sunday night.

Jade hade been backed from 1.10 into 1.05, while Dino had firmed from 1.90 into 1.50 late in the betting. There had also been money for Krystal when she drifted out to 2.40, while Camilla also met with some support at 4.50. That now has the record at seven favourites from seven evictions!

There aren't any clear signs from early betting on who will go this week. Both Rob and Danielle (2.10) have attracted an equal number of bets, while Camilla (6.50) again looks safe.

The overall winner book has Katie back at favourite (4.00) after David overtook her last week. A South Australian client backed David to take out $10,000 and he firmed from 7.00 into 4.50 as others tailed him in, but the interest has now dried up in the farmer.

He is back out to 5.50, while we continue to see money for both Jamie (6.00) and John at the same quote. The only problem with John is that it looks like BB has worked out he has been flying under the radar and is trying to devise ways of bringing this up.

IT TAKES TWO

Richard Zachariah carried one of the year’s biggest entertainment bets into Sunday night’s second showing of It Takes Two.

A Queensland punter threw $3000 on Richard to be the first booted off the show at 1.72 and in keeping with the way reality favourites have been going, Zachariah didn't let the punter down.

Katie Fischer is the hot 1.30 favourite to go next week and there has been little interest shown in any other singer. Katie's price to win overall has blown out to 101.00 after we saw money for her at 16.00 when betting first opened. We currently have three equal favourites on 4.00, with Mark Furze, Simon Reeve and Erica Heynatz all proving popular with punters in what looks an extremely difficult contest to pick.

Until next week, good punting For further information contact Gerard Daffy at Centrebet on 02 9206 8715 or centrebet@centrebet.com
