This weekend will reveal a lot about the Australian Cup, a race Northerly dominates with the Eskander Racing office.

Northerly is into $3 but there is depth of opposition with Ethereal ($6), Ustinov ($8), Old Comrade ($10) and Cent Home ($13). All are running at Caulfield on Saturday, Ustinov in the Shannons Classic and the remainder in the St George Stakes.

The Secondmortgage is a likely runner in the Australian Cup and will use the Victoria Gold Cup (2000m) as a lead-up. Stablemate Greenstone Charm won the race last year. Michael has laid The Secondmortgage in the Sydney Cup this week at $10.

Oakleigh Plate failure Chong Tong appears to be forgiven after missing the start clearly last week. Punters have rallied to take $5.50 about him in the Newmarket Handicap and he has been coupled extensively in doubles. Mistegic, runner-up in the Oakleigh Plate and Lightning Stakes, remains very popular at $8.

A number of inquiries have been made at the office for the Gai Waterhouse-trained Excellerator in the Newmarket on the strength of an excellent trial second to last start Sydney winner Ha Ha. He is kept safe at $10.

Ha Ha, Lonhro and Sunline share the top line of betting in the Doncaster Handicap at $6. Sunline is due to run on Saturday week in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill while Lonhro is listed as a trial runner in Sydney this morning.

Futurity Stakes favourite Dash For Cash is at $13 and punters have displayed a lot of interest. He shares that quote Crawl and Shogun Lodge, the latter chasing back-to-back wins in the Canterbury Stakes on Saturday night.

In the Sydney Cup, Youhadyourwarning is into $21 after being at the forefront of inquiries this week. It was coupled at 660-1 with Defier in the Doncaster, who has been tried since his flashing second to Bomber Bill at Warwick Farm last week.

Bel Esprit is at $4 for the Golden Slipper and that is top odds. He is much shorter with other outlets but Michael is prepared to lay him despite punters claiming $5 early in the week after the Blue Diamond win.

Choisir shares favouritism for the juvenile event at $4 and is quite popular with punters. He runs in the Skyline Stakes at Canterbury on Saturday night. arwick Farm winner Snowland, Chuckle, Pillaging and Delago Brom command plenty of attention.

In the world of sports betting, interest has lifted in AFL markets with the Wizard Cup coming to its climax. Port Power's recent winning form has seen them the flavour of the month in 2002 Premiership betting. They have firmed in $10.
