Is Bel Esprit the luckiest horse around? After the Golden Slipper barrier draw, that is the conclusion I come to. The unbeaten Victorian colt looks set to continue on his winning way in Saturday's race by default. With him drawing barrier one and his main opponents drawing wide - including Choisir, Victory Vein and Snowland - the barrier draw has fallen into place for Bel Esprit. Lee Freedman was unable to get a suitable flight for Blue Diamond placegetter Pillaging after his easy win in VRC Sires' Produce. And Choisir got beaten by Planchet last weekend after laying out and throwing the race away, not the sort of thing you want to see from a nominal favourite one week out from the Slipper...just another bonus for the Bel Esprit camp. How do they beat Bel Esprit? I've looked down the barrel at worse results than this. The money has come for Bel Esprit again since the weekend after a couple of quiet weeks. Now the punters are also coupling him in the Doncaster Handicap with another lucky horse in Sunline. I've laid a good bet on Queensland filly Calaway Gal at 20-1 to an informed punter. I suspect Victory Vein and Snowland, despite their bad alleys, will be there at the finish. Dama De Noche is a good outsider. I have brought Bel Esprit into $3, after $5 was on offer last week, due to weight of money.
