Weekend Wrap
Posted 11:50 AM, March 26, 2002

Sorry we're late. Unusual circumstances. We all know the politicians have been blowing a bit of hot air lately as they become experts on the racing industry, but we didn't expect the call on Monday to appear before the Senate 'Punters Overboard' Inquiry. We hadn't seen any of the pictures but they showed us the photo finish of the BMW and we had to admit it looked pretty distressing for favourite backers who'd pinned their hopes on 'The Prince'. But it hadn't been dummied and as our representative said to the august committee, we were quite happy for that lovely lady to train that lovely mare to get up and impossibly put her snozz in front metres from the line. We just felt happy for them. And when the Golden Slipper photo was produced we nearly wept with joy, but once again it was authentic. Some bloke with glasses and a sombre suit asked us if we had seen any punters thrown off the SS Scott Seamer or refused a passage on the Corey Brown. Whilst there did seem to be a happy old throng on both vessels having a wow of a time during races one and two and neglecting to pick up any bookmakers treading water, we told the inquiry that most seemed to have jumped of their own volition. Their was only that short period passing the Brian York Peninsula around race 5 that any life jackets at all were thrown, all round that it was sink or swim. We felt like Thorpedo but as Chris Grant will tell you, every doggie has his day and this was ours.

The NRL caught a few without their water wings as well. The Friday night draw between the Broncos and the Bulldogs produced a couple of half face value results, firstly for a Brisbane punter investing 5000k at the I.28 and a Bulldogs man with $3000 at the $4.00 . Fifteen thousand at the line on Canterbury (+10 I/2) had a bit more up the sleeve and a wad to play with over the weekend Didn't do a lot on the Sharks/Storm game which in hindsight did have a nautical feel about it, Cronulla $6000 at the I.25 , Superman's love life for The Storm. The barnstorming Newcastle attracted punters around the 2 -3000 mark happy to give the start of -23 I/2 and secure the evens and ten thousand at the I.05. There's an old bloke's saying about betting on South Sydney, unfortunately with all the carry on of being called before the truth benders we can't remember what it is. There's a time when you back them and a time when you don't he used to say, but didn't elaborate much on that. He also said Russell Crowe rang them Friday night and offered thirty odd foot of grunting good luck and recited the poem to the team which was edited from the British Academy Awards presentation. Russell was going to read it again during the week if they lost. Don't think the punter who had $10,700 on Canberra to win $I,500 had that information available to him. Incentive like that would have got the Titanic across the line. Canberra were all the go, backed from an early I.25 to I.14. and a few more life jackets were summonsed at homes around the nation.

Not across the Tasman though. They treat their refugees a bit more humanely over there. Our Warriors man went 20k at the line with the plus 3.5, 10k to win and another at the evens with the point and a half start as they beat the favoured Roosters.

There was a theory put forward on 'The Fat' last Monday that you back teams according to their 'brand' name. Makes sense. A Warrior gets the money against a Rooster , no race between a Dragon and a Panther, you could call that before they entered the arena on this theory. An Eel against a Tiger? Where do we get on? We couldn't lay the Tiger even out to +16.5, but 13k slipped in via The Eels at the I.11. A few hard men reckon there's a pattern emerging with the Eels. Two out of the last three games they say. Too small a sample at this stage.

'Punter' Ponting as captain didn't put any heebee geebees up the cricket punters who wanted a bet, but maybe a few stayed out to see what gives. $5000 at the I.70 Australia was as bad as it got. And as the AFL gets ready to fire, just remember that no matter what looks like might have gone on, there's no points on the board as yet. Port Adelaide are still the go for the flag with another 5k coming in at the 7.00. It's all 'new era's' 'fresh starts', 'promising lists' and 'rejuvenated veterans' at this stage . It's a new ball game as it will be next week for us. But this week we're buying our macadamia nuts from Scott Seamer's farm. Not as though he'd need the dough, but we'd like to return the favour. Who knows, next week we might want him to go back there. That's punting. That's racing. That's all folks.
