Betting Wrap
One punter was very confident of a Dockers victory and invested $10,000 on them at a quote of $3.80 for a nice collect of $38,000. Bulldogs fans really rallied to the cause and the Westerners were heavily backed from $1.60 to $1.40 in one of the biggest plunges of the year. Numerous bets of $2,000 and $3,000 were put on the "doggies" as punters took any odds on offer towards the end of betting. One of the few big bets to go astray was in the Port Adelaide-West Coast game at Footy Park when one of our bigger punters had a bet of $16,000 on the Eagles at a quote of $2.75. The Sunday treble was enticing to one punter who placed $3,000 on the Sydney-Port Adelaide-Adelaide combination at a quote of $4.35 for a nice win of just over $10,000 and complete a round of happiness for AFL punters. In Premiership betting continued support for Collingwood sees them firm up to a ludicrous price for the Flag at $14.00 whilst the problems at Bomber land see the Lions getting shorter and shorter at $2.15 to collect back-to-back Flags. As usual we had specking at long odds prior to round 6 for teams in the Premiership betting with two optimistic bets standing out (both from Queensland). $1,000 on Freo at $101 to win $100,000 and (this is not a typo) $500 on St.Kilda at $251 to win nothing-even though it says a collect of $125,500. Other spendthrifts with a sense of humour were the punters that had $20 on the round 6 hi-low double - St.Kilda into Collingwood at 1000/1 and $20 on the AFL/NRL Premiership double of Carlton into Melbourne Storm at a quote of 3000/1. Now that Nathan Buckley has been cleared of a striking charge from last week we may be able to get some sanity back in the Brownlow betting over the next few rounds. A couple of good bets from last week were $300 each-way on Essendon's Blake Caracella at $251 to win just over $93,000 and $500 on the West Coast Eagles' youngster, Michael Gardiner at a quote of $61 to win a tidy $30,000 if the youngster can have a stellar year. One punter is surely getting super optimistic with his investment of $100 each-way on the Magpies veteran of 3 games, Mark McGough at his price of $301. Although most of us think the Saints nearly certainties for the Wooden Spoon one punter disagrees and has had a dip at Geelong to finish on the bottom with a bet of $400 at $61 to try and win $24,000. NRL Rugby League gave us some respite from our AFL thumping with some good results over the weekend, although we did have some punters who did very nicely for themselves out of Round 10. One Canberra punter confidently predicted a Raiders win and placed $3,000 on them to beat the Sharks over 12.5 points at $5.25 to pocket $15,750 whilst at the other end of the scale a Knights fan obviously thought they were the best of good things and plonked $28,000 on them at $1.40 to knock off Melbourne Storm and collected $39,200 for his trouble. SOCCER The FA Cup punters were right on the ball with Arsenal a $1.40 favourite to take out the coveted trophy for a ninth time. In the match betting there was some money for the draw but Chelsea were very hard to lay and the punters just kept on putting their hard earned on Arsenal backing them from $2.10 to be in to $1.90 at game time. One astute judge was too clever for us in the exact score and placed two bets of $2,000 each on Arsenal to win 2-1 at $7.00 and 2-0 at $8.50 and duly collected a tidy sum of $17,000 for his outlay of four thousand. RACING Fixed odds horse racing betting is going along nicely with pre-post betting available on all the feature races in Brisbane and Adelaide during their respective carnivals. The Stradbroke Handicap in particular has created enormous interest with some solid betting on the June 8 event. Falvalon and Lord Essex have both been heavily backed into equal favouritism at $7.50 from $12 and $14 respectively. Late last week we layed some nice bets on other Stradbroke chances in Gold Class ($1500 at $14.00) and Empire ($1800 at $41.00). Well with a week where the punters won the battle we look forward to taking up the gauntlet again this week and turning the tide on the "enemy".
