LIONS CONTINUE TO SHORTEN FOR FLAG Leigh Matthews' Brisbane Lions have shortened up again in the AFL premiership betting at TABSportsbet after their emphatic win over Port Adelaide at the Gabba on Sunday. The "top of the ladder" Lions are now at a quote of $2.00 to take out back to back flags. The favourites, who carry a bet of $25,000 at $4.00, have firmed steadily over the last few weeks from $2.65 after round 5 to $2.20 after round 6 and now their post round 7 quote of $2.00. It is interesting to note that last year after round 7, Essendon were quoted at $1.85 to take out the 2001 AFL premiership. A couple of Essendon punters have certainly not given up hope and TABSportsbet has taken two good bets on the Bombers, $15,000 at $5.50 for a collect of $82,500 and $5,000 at $5.00 for a return of $25,000. Away from the favourites, a W.A. punter has put his money on the Eagles to turn around their 14th position finish last year to a flag this year, with a $500 investment on West Coast at $51.00 for a handsome profit of $25,000. Hawthorn have been the biggest shorteners for the flag after the weekend's round of football coming in from $13.00 to $10.00 as they continued their form revival with a 52 point demolition of the Cats at the MCG on Saturday.
