AFL WEEK 6 WRAP

Round 6 of the AFL saw a mixed bag of results for the punters and the Sportsbet bookmanagers although in the end the bookmanagers came out on top for the weekend.

Adelaide started the ball rolling for favourite punters on Friday night when they beat the Kangaroos, although there was plenty of money for the “Roos”, including one bet of $15,000 at $2.30 on Thursday. The money continued for the Kangas and they got in to $2.15 by the time the ball was bounced with the Crows out to $1.62.

There were plenty of forgiving punters who put their hard earned on the Demons who got in from $1.90 to run clear cut favourites in the end at $1.65, which in turn gave the West Coast fans some good value at $2.10. Another team that was disappointing last week but heavily backed this round was Collinwood and the avalanche of dollars for the Pies saw them firm right up from their opening price of $1.35 to a very skinny $1.20. This solid support for the Magpies was a bonus to one Swans punter who waited until the Sydneysiders got out to $4.00 and then launched with a bet of $15,000 to net himself a nice return of $60,000. Punters were not afraid to take the short odds about another favourite, Port Adelaide, backing Mark Williams’ boys from $1.25 to $1.15 and they had more success than the Pie punters with the Power comfortable winners in the end at AAMI Stadium by 27 points. Richmond got out to $4.75 even though they had won their last four games and were sitting second on the ladder and it was too big for one punter who placed $10,000 on the Tigers to try and get back $47,500.

Another punter had a crack at the Geelong in their quest to knock over Flag favourites, Brisbane, and although the bet of $8,000 at $4.65 gave our intrepid investor a run for his money the Cars never really looked like getting the four premiership points.

Fremantle v Essendon and Western Bulldogs v StKilda both looked as if they would be hard games to pick the winner and we virtually left it to the punters to decide, but alas for them they went the wrong way in both matches. Essendon were marginal favourites at $1.80 when the ball was bounced at Subiaco but punters had really supported the Bombers in the doubles, trebles and Pick 4 and the Dockers big win was well received at TABSportsbet. In the other game the “Bullies” were backed from $1.90 to $1.75 and consequently the Saints got out to $1.95 at which price a couple of StKilda fans helped them selves to $10,000 each on the victorious Sainters.

Plenty of betting action away from the games themselves last week with punters sorting out the following long term bets.

Premiership - $1,000 on StKilda at $61.00

$1,000 on Hawthorn at $51,00

Final 8 - $20,000 on Richmond at $1.70

Wooden Spoon $400 on Richmond at $71.00

$400 on West Coast at $151.00

$100 on Adelaide at $501.00

Brownlow $500 on Chad Cornes at $101

And one punter has tried to get some dollars out of Hawthorn making the Grand Final by taking Quinellas as follows;

Hawthorn - Brisbane $1,000 at $55.00 to win $54,000

Hawthorn - Essendon $400 at $180.00 to win $71,600

Hawthorn - Richmond $150 at $460.00 to win $68,850

NRL was lively at the weekend with some good betting on a few of the games including a bet of $18,000 on Melbourne Storm at $1.85 which turned out to be easy money as they thumped Newcastle forty six points to six. Another punter took the odds-on the Dragons with a bet of $10,000 on them at $1.50 and had few worries as they took care of the Sharks 28 – 12. A Wests Tigers fan tried to get a dollar by punting his team at the line of + 13.5 points against the Brisbane Broncos with a bet of $9,000 at $2.20 but the shoreline of 38-6 in favour of the Broncos gave him little joy.

Premiership betting saw one of the “roughies” backed to win $32,000 with a client having $800 on the Penrith Panthers at a quote of $41.00.

Although we bet fixed returns on a number of races in three cities over the weekend, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide, betting was solid without being spectacular, although one punter is looking ahead with a bet of $400 each-way on StBasil in the Stradbroke at $101 for a possible win of $50,000
