AFL WEEK 7 WRAP Punters had a tough time in round 7 of the AFL with only 3 of the 8 favourites getting to the line. Hawthorn started the “beaten favourites” ball rolling on Friday night against the Kangaroos when they succumbed fairly meekly after being backed from $1.60 to $1.53. The punters only wanted West Coast in their game against Geelong at Subiaco and they didn’t really care what price they had to take. Opening at $1.16 the fans launched into the Eagles as their price tumbled to $1.11 with a series of good-sized bets including $17,000 at $1.13 and $20,000 at $1.11. We did however find one Geelong punter who was keen to get on his boys with a bet of $16,000 at $5.60 head to head and $20,000 at the line of + 34.5 points which netted him a collect of $39,000 as the Cats battled the match out bravely to go down by only 16 points. Surprisingly we could not entice punters to try Richmond against an injury riddled Essendon and the Tigers got out to a remarkable $2.80 as the money continued to pour in for the Bombers, as they shortened from an opening quote of $1.60 to jump at $1.38. First bet of the round on Monday morning was a wager of $10,000 on Collingwood at $2.70 and at one stage they were in to $2.55 before the money came for the home side and the Maggies were out to $2.75 by game time. Once again our Pies punter stepped in and invested $15,000 on the Woods to collect a healthy $41,250 when the Woodsmen showed tremendous courage to come from 31 points down early in the match to snatch victory with an “after the siren” goal. Sunday’s games saw each of the winning teams shorten in the betting with Sydney coming from $3.00 to $2.70 as they impressively disposed of Premiership favourites Brisbane whilst the Demons were backed from $3.20 to $2.90 as they blunted the might of Port Adelaide with a solid 27 point victory. Fremantle certainly got rid of their “Melbourne” bogey with a thumping 83 point drubbing of the Western Bulldogs and punters went the right way in this game as the Dockers shortened up to run favourites at $1.80 over the disappointing Doggies who went from $1.80 out to $1.90. One punter showed a bit of dash when he invested $2,000 on Freo to win over 39.5 points at a quote of $6.00 and never had any worries about collecting his $12,000. Not much Premiership action last week however one regular punter would not have been happy with Hawthorn’s surrender to the Kangaroos after he invested $20,000 on the Hawks at $1.90 to make the Final 8. Another long term bet was placed on the Brisbane-Hawthorn Grand Final Quinella with $1200 invested at a quote $25.00 only to see both teams lose on the weekend, but that bet still has more chance than the $10.00 bet put on a StKilda – Fremantle Grand Final at a quote of $1,000. The Brownlow Medal betting continued at a steady rate last week with some of the more interesting wagers being $1,000 on the Power’s Gavin Wanganeen at $21.00, $40.00 on Saints’ captain, Aaron Hamill at $501 and $70.00 each-way on the Eagles’ Phillip Read at $1001 to win $87,500. We did find a spendthrift with a sense of humour last week who destroyed $10.00 by having an AFL/NRL Premiership double comprising Carlton and Manly Sea Eagles. Round 9 of the NRL saw a couple of nice winning bets with one punter having $10,000 head to head on the Storm at $2.00 as they eased out from an opening quote of $1.90 whilst another punter took Canterbury Bulldogs at the line of +2.5 pts against the Sydney Roosters. That punter’s $10,000 at $2.00 was never in any real danger as the Doggies got home 32 points to 26. A Super 12’s punter got his fingers burnt after plonking $20,000 head to head at $1.48 on the ACT Brumbies to beat the Canterbury Crusaders in Canberra on Friday night, as they went down 28-21 to the Kiwi side. The introduction of head to head betting on selected matches at the weekly ATP tennis tournaments throughout the world has met with great support. Both turnover and revenue are encouraging which should ensure that we continue with this new initiative. One punter is obviously keen on the idea having invested $20,000 on Juan Carlos Ferrero at $1.25 earlier in the week in his quarter final win over Rainer Schuettler. In racing, the carnivals in Brisbane
and Adelaide are getting into full swing with one punter deciding on Mr
Magoo for the Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville with a bet of $1,000
each-way at a quote of $26 for possible collect of $31,250.
