AFL WEEK 8 WRAP Punters should have plenty of money to bet up with on Round 9 of the AFL as they won the battle in Round 8 with seven of the eight opening favourites saluting. West coast Eagles were always underdogs in the betting in their match whilst the market in Friday night’s game between Essendon and Hawthorn at the MCG swung around once the punters found out that Hird and Lloyd would be late withdrawals. The bombers opened favourites at $1.80 with the Hawks at $1.90 but by game time the Dons had eased to $1.90 with Hawthorn taking over as favourites at $1.80. West Coasts win over Collingwood was a great result for TABSportsbet as The Magpies were heavily backed right from the start of betting on Monday morning. First bet of the week was $20,000 on the Pies at $1.60, quickly followed by $10,000 at $1.55 and it didn’t stop there with the Woods getting in to $1.40 by the first bounce. With all the backing for Collingwood, the Eagles got out to $2.70 from their opening quote of $2.20 and still we could not attract any interest from the punters. The betting was also one-way traffic in the Port Adelaide – Kangaroos game at AAMI Stadium with punters backing the Power from $1.40 to $1.26 with Roos friendless in the betting as they got from $2.70 out to $3.50. The Brisbane ($1.22) – Adelaide ($3.80) game was interesting from a betting point of view in that we did not make a single odds change from the time of opening at 11am Monday till the start of the match at 7.10 pm Saturday. This would indicate that we got the pricing spot on for that game. Geelong were specked at $3.50 (in to $3.30) up in Sydney against the Swans however the biggest bet for the Cats was at the line (+22.5 pts) where one client invested $15,000 at $1.85 only to see Sydney over-run the Cats in the end to win by 39 points. The Fremantle-StKilda game threw up an interesting bet on Sunday afternoon when a punter launched into the Dockers at three quarter time with a bet of $30,000 at $1.07 to win $2,100and didn’t have a worry in the world as Freo strolled to a 41 point victory. Although there was premiership money once again this week for Hawthorn it may be a long time before any punter dips into his pocket again to back the Hawks as the bet of $1,100 at $41.00 to win the Flag looks to be gone already after their insipid display against the Bombers on Friday night. One would tend to think there was a full moon all last week with some of the Brownlow Medal bets. Check this lot out: $40 on Matthew Boyd (WB) at $2001 to win $80,000 $35 on Lewis Roberts-Thomson (Syd) at $2001 to win $70,000 $70 on Robert Copeland (Bris) at $1001 to win $70,000 $25 e/w on Callan Beasy (Carl) at $2001 to win $62,500 $40 on Brett Moyle (StK) at $2001 to win $80,000 $40 on Andrew Merrington at $2001 to win $80,000 And then there was one that actually may have some chance $500 on Richmond’s Mark Coughlan at a quote of $35 to win $17,500. A couple of punters got involved in the line betting in the NRL this week with their judgement spot on. A bet of $10,000 on Parramatta at $1.90 with a start of 2.5 points was successful (just) as the Eels went down to Manly Sea Eagles 36 points to 34, whilst another punter found St George/Illawarra with a start of 4.5 points over Canterbury Bulldogs and his bet of $18,000 at $2.10 was good as the Dragons went down 18 points to 16 at WIN Stadium. We also found one client taking a couple of $100 AFL/NRL Premiership doubles by coupling Geelong – yes Geelong, with the Sydney Roosters at a quote of $570 and Canterbury Bulldogs at a quote of $605. I trust he realizes it a Premiership double and not a Wooden Spoon-Premiership double. It was a big week in soccer with huge betting on the two Champions League semi-finals mid week and the FA Cup on Saturday night. One Juventus punter got it right with $15,000 on the black and whites at a quote of $2.40 against Real Madrid for a nice collect of $36,000. FA Cup betting was very good considering the game was rather lopsided betting wise and it was quite a pleasant surprise to win over $50,000 on the exact score result of Arsenal 1 nil. Plenty of good betting at both Doomben and Morphettville at the weekend with one skilful punter finding Bomber Bill in the Goodwood with a bet of $750 at a quote of $15.00 to win $10,500 whilst a Doomben 10,000 punter let fly at This Manshood with a series of bets totalling $1,600 at an average price of $41.00 (to win $64,000) only to see the Tim Martin trained gelding run down the track.
