Spring Carnival Update
With Epsom/Metropolitan weekend almost upon us, and Melbourne's big spring features just weeks away, business at the Michael Eskander office has been frenetic. While short-priced double combinations were all the rage last week, punters have warmed to some lesser fancied types in the Melbourne Cup. We layed a bet of $140,000 to $2,000 EW about exciting New Zealander Hail, following his slashing run at the weekend. English stayer Jardine's Lookout has been extremely popular in doubles, but we slashed his Melbourne Cup price from $81 to $51 in light of a $1000 EW bet, from a source very close to the stable. Sydney Cup winner Henderson Bay is in to $51 in the Melbourne Cup, following an impressive run at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The Bart Cummings trained mare, Tyrolean, at $41 in the Caulfield Cup, and $67 in the Melbourne Cup has also been well represented in feature doubles. In the Caulfield Cup, punters have warmed to Tony Mc Evoy's emerging stayer Fields of Omagh, who is now expected to focus on that event, rather than the W.S Cox Plate. A flood of money on Tuesday forced us to trim his quote from $13 into $10, a frightening result given we layed the horse to lose $200,000 back in July. Cup aspirant Dash For Cash also met with stable inspired support to the tune of $100,000 to $1000 EW on Monday. And WFA star Northerly has been the medium of good support, with one bet of $18,000 to $2,000 in the Caulfield Cup, coming in anticipation of a strong performance in this Saturdays Turnbull Stakes. Business has also been brisk on the W.S Cox Plate. Punters have coupled up George Main Stakes winner Defier in doubles with the top Cups chances, three year old filly Victory Vein is now $16, after as much as $21 was bet earlier in the week, and international raider Grandera firmed to $6.50 from $8. But the weekend's features in Sydney have attracted the most interest from punters. We fielded a second large bet on Victorian stayer Big Pat in Monday's Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick after $41 was bet last week. Regally bred Manner Hill ($34) was also well tried at $51 once acceptances came through today. Best backed, however, has been the lightly raced mare Youhadyourwarning ($5.5), who drew barrier 19 in the 2400m Group 1. In Saturdays Epsom Handicap (Group1, 1600M), Defier is a solid $3 favourite, but the serious money came for Universal Prince after the high profile stayer drew ideally in barrier 6. One punter claimed us for $5,500 EW at $6, before we moved him up a line. Jack Denham's Zabarra drew awkwardly in gate 11, but met with strong support with one bet of $20,000 to $1,000 EW. We now have fixed odds markets out on the VRC Derby, VRC Oaks and the Vinery Thousand Guineas and are open for business on other feature events like Friday's Bill Stutt Stakes and Saturdays high quality Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
