Grand Final Wrap
Posted 7:00 PM, October 1, 2002

Well, what a week that was.

Record hold on the Brownlow Medal, record hold on the Head to Head betting in the Grand Final, and increases in all the other forms of betting we offered on the AFL throughout the week.

Brownlow Medal betting was up from $1,572,000 last year to $1,660,000 this year on the medal itself. However with all the extra betting options we offered, the Brownlow turnover reached 2.4 million which was an increase of ?% on last years figures.

Although we had a reasonable win on Simon Black he was easily the best supported player on the day of the Brownlow, coming in from $10.00 early in the day to a quote of $6.50 when the vote counting commenced.

Some of the bigger bets on Black during the day were $5,000 at $10.00, $1,500 at $7.50 and $1,000 each-way at $7.50. One astute punter was also clever enough to invest $1,000 on the Black – Francou quinella combination at a quote of $18.00. Other significant bets during the day were: $20,000 on Luke Darcy at $3.75 and $2,500 each way on Peter Bell at a quote of $31.00

Betting on the Grand Final was frantic with the money early in the week being for Brisbane, including the first bet of the match, $30,000 at $1.30. The Magpie supporters however showed their support from Friday afternoon onwards and there seemed to be unlimited money for the Pies as they were backed from $3.80 to a quote of $3.30 prior to the start of the game. Two Collingwood punters had $10,000 at $3.80 and $3.60 respectively, whilst another invested $8,400 at $3.40 as their price continued to tumble. With Collingwood’s price coming in the Lions obviously eased in the betting and one punter could not resist the $1.33 that Brisbane got out to and unloaded with a bet of $90,000 to win $29,700. A further bet of $40,000 was taken as we turned the Lions odds to $1.30 and this punter collected $52,000.

As usual there were the extra clever punters and one such person had a bet of $7,000 on “either team under 15.5 points” at a quote of $3.75 to collect a handy $26,250. Although he did not win, one punter got a fairly good run for his money with a bet of $1,000 on the draw at $51.00.

NRL preliminary final betting was certainly not as frantic as the AFL Grand Final, however we still have some happy punters even though both favourites were beaten. A Warriors punter had $10,000 on the Kiwis at $2.20 to collect $22,000 and then $8,000 on them at the line (+4.5 points) to collect a further $14,800. Another Warriors punter obviously thought that they could go all the way even though they were the outsiders of the four left in the Premiership race and bet $5,000 at $5.25 to collect $26,250 if the New Zealanders are the 2002 NRL Premiers. The Roosters were also well supported against Brisbane with the biggest bet being $10,000 at $2.05.

The fixed odds racing juggernaut continues to roll on with an extraordinary amount of small punters having their five, ten and twenty dollar doubles with TABSportsbet.

The George Main stakes in Sydney was a terrific betting race with the clash between Lonhro, Sunline, Defier and Shogun Lodge getting the punters fired up. One of our bigger punters found the winner, Defier, with a bet of $5,000 at $4.25 for a nice profit of $16,250.
