AUSTRALIAN RULES

The Sydney Swans have dominated the headlines around the country for the last week.

Firstly with the Brownlow Medal 'leak', secondly with their win over St Kilda which catapulted them into the Grand Final and lastly...Barry Hall.’ Big Bad Barry' has had his face plastered all over every newspaper in the Australia after he had to front the tribunal.

After opening at 1.85, several $20,000 bets (the last two at 1.73) saw the Eagles as clear cut favourites before Barry Hall walked into the tribunal on Tuesday night. All GF betting was suspended pending the result and when Hall emerged two hours later without a penalty, we re-opened betting with both sides at 1.90.

In the first 10 minutes following that, nearly $10,000 was placed on the Swans to win, $1000 on Hall to win the Norm Smith Medal, and close to $800 (all in small bets) for him to be the first goal scorer.

The Norm Smith Medal has attracted unprecedented interest, with the Eagles mid field, and of course Barry Hall, drawing most interest. Chris Judd (6.00 into 5.50) and Ben Cousins (8.00 into 7.00) have each been backed to win nearly $40,000 in the first three days of trading, while Hall (8.00) has been backed to nearly half that amount.

As for the Brownlow Medal, it came as no surprise that Ben Cousins won the award. He had been favourite for the last three months, getting as short as 1.55 but went into the Medal count at 2.10, ahead of Scott West at 4.25.

The 'leak' that circulated the country last Friday saw a flurry of business for Brett Kirk, who according to the leaked email, tied with Cousins on 27 votes. Why people tumble into these I don't know, but the price for Kirk crashed from 17 into 8.00, before drifting out to 11.00 on Monday.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Wests Tigers have become every rugby league fans second favourite side and the way the Tigers are playing, it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that they could upset the Dragons this week and make it through to the Grand Final.

The Tigers landed plenty of massive bets last weekend before disposing of the Broncos. We were fortunate enough to get four early bets of $20,000 for Brisbane at 1.90 but on game day, public support (including two big bets of $40,000 and $25,000) forced the Tigers into outright favourites at 1.85.

As soon as betting opened on this week’s preliminary final, Wests Tigers fans launched straight into them again. St George Illawarra opened favourites at 1.50 with the Tigers at 2.50 but the first $10,000 was for the Tigers. Even a cut to 2.40 hasn't really turned many Tigers fans away as we continue to see bets coming through.

In the other final, it is all one way action but not for the outsiders on this occasion. We posted Parramatta at 1.28 thinking that those who lined up to back the North Queensland Cowboys last week would come back for a return bout but that hasn't eventuated yet. In fact, we took bets of $25,000 (1.28), $20,000 (1.26) and $30,000 (1.25) so now they are into 1.23 with the Cowboys out to 4.10.

Don't forget there is updated betting at half-time on each game and the Grand Final prices will be available as soon as Sunday's game is over.

CRICKET

Ricky Ponting and his men are back and with finals fever embracing the country, all the talk of who should go and who should stay has died down.

There was however, an immediate reaction to the next Ashes series betting with plenty of Englishmen who are chock full of confidence (and cash) at the moment, rushing in to take the opening quote of 4.00 and then 3.50.

We currently have England at 3.25 to retain the Ashes, with a drawn series at 5.00 and the Australians easing out to 1.70.

The Aussies take on the World Eleven in a one-day series beginning in Melbourne on Wednesday October 5. Betting has opened at 1.85 apiece and already we have taken close to $20,000 in bets, with action split right down the middle.

The World Eleven is a terrific side on paper but of course they haven't played together while Australia did defeat England in a one-day series before the Ashes started.

RACING

The first big plunge for this year’s Melbourne Cup originated at Centrebet last week when overseas raider Sweet Stream was sensationally backed.

The Italian bred mare was backed to win $250,000 each way at 34.00 by a client closely connected to the stable after winning a group two race in France last week. Sweet Stream is now into 26.00 in what is shaping as the biggest betting Cup of all time.

Makybe Diva and Plastered still head the markets at 7.00 but the two other significant movers for the week have been Vinnie Roe (13-11) after he finished third in the Irish St Leger and Perlin (41-21) who recorded an impressive win at Caulfield.

Makybe Diva continues to meet with support in the Cox Plate as well as the Melbourne Cup. This week, one of our racing regulars placed $10,000 on Makybe Diva winning the Cox Plate at 3.00. She is now into 2.75 with second pick, Lad of the Manor easing slightly to 6.00

BOXING

Robbie Peden lost his WBC and IBF title fight with Marco Antonio Barrero on Sunday but didn't lose many admirers in a tough 12 rounder that saw the points go against him.

Peden was backed by the Australian public from 5.25 into 4.50 with the biggest of those bets being $3000 at 5.00. That enabled us to push the price out for Barrero to cater for overseas punters, which saw him touch 1.20 when the fight got under way, even though we had taken big bets of $30,000 at 1.15 and $25,000 at 1.16.

The other news in boxing circles last week was the much anticipated fight between Anthony Mundine and Danny Green finally getting the green light. We have put this bout up twice before but it now seems as though the Mundine camp think they can win, so it will go ahead early next year.

This will be the biggest betting fight ever conducted in this country due to the profile of Mundine and the 'trash talk' that has developed between this pair over the past two years. We posted Mundine as favourite at 1.75 with Green the underdog at 2.00.

In an early showing of how big this event will be, nearly $3000 was bet in the first 24 hours of betting, with the money split between the two.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

The first two weeks of the NFL has been entertainment plus and this week looks no different with a cavalcade of great match-ups.

The Cincinnati Bengals have finally groomed their youthful stars into winners and are two and 0 for the first time in a long, long time. They visit a Chicago Bears team who are anything but easy beats at home who had an impressive win against Detroit last start. Chicago’s defence will keep them in any game and if there offense performs with pick of the rookie class Kyle Orton at quarterback the Bengals may be in for a long day.

The match of the round has the reigning super bowl champion Patriots away to the regular season kings Pittsburgh (15 and 1 last season). The Steelers have started where they left off and are two wins from two this season.

The Patriots lost last week to Carolina and a one and three record in the AFC would make it difficult for any team to make the playoffs so expect a desperate showing from them.

This fixture last year handed the Patriots their worst loss in two seasons but they were able to eliminate Pittsburgh one win short of the super bowl at this venue so it will be the Steelers out for revenge. The Steelers will be 1.60 favourites so if you like the Patriots you will get value.

MOTOR BIKES

Valentino Rossi will have to wait at least another week to wrap up the MotoGP Championship after he and his bike parted company in the Japanese Grand Prix last weekend.

Rossi fared badly in qualifying and started the race in unfamiliar territory, back at number 11 on the grid. He was 1.45 before practice but was out to 2.15 when the grid was decided. It is difficult to come from so far back and win but punters have a lot of faith in 'the Doctor' and we had no trouble laying him, with the largest bets being €4000 and $3000.

Rossi was a long way back when he fell off and faced an uphill battle to win anyway with that honour going to Loris Capirossi who recorded his first win of the season.

Capirossi was well in commission at 13.00 in the opening market, which saw one of our really astute Italian bike clients take with two bets of €100.

Capirossi is 3.00 to repeat the dose at Sepang in the Malaysian Grand Prix this week, with Rossi the favourite at 1.65. We have noticed there is apprehension to take the 'shorts' for Rossi but one thing he has shown in past seasons is that he isn't about protecting a lead in a championship, he rides to win every race.

IDOL

If ever there looked to be a 'good thing' in a reality TV show, it has to be Dan England in the current series of Australian Idol.

Dan, the 'Dreadlock Man', has been the standout of the competition so far and is immensely popular with the judges, also the public and is now into 2.50. We have taken about $800 for him this week, but what is helping to hold his price up is support for most of the others.

The next three in the market have each been backed this week with Anne attracting two $500 wagers at 5.50, Kate DeAraugo (5.50) nearly the same amount, while Emily Williams (5.50) has come right into the betting after opening at 34.00.

In New Zealand, Nik Carlson from Masterton is back into favourite to win the second series of Idol. Following a few poor performances, Nik blew out in the betting to 5.50 at one stage but following the elimination of Rongo Brightwell last week, Nik is now an odds-on favourite.

Second pick is Teresa Bergmann (4.00 into 3.50) who has this week been backed to win nearly $5000, while Jesse O'Brien (8.00) is the only other singer whom punters have shown any interest in.

DANCING WITH THE STARS

Veteran actor, Michael Caton was this week's casualty on Dancing with the Stars but he was the 26.00 outsider prior to Tuesday's show anyway.

There hasn't been a lot of change at the top of the charts with Chris Bath maintaining favouritism at 2.75 ahead of Ada Nicodemou (4.50) and Ian Dickson (5.00). 'Dicko' is still the one who we are seeing the most bets for.

There has been a concerted push for Brodie Holland who was a 21.00 chance two weeks ago. Apparently an email has been sent to Collingwood members telling them that they should vote to keep their man in the show and as a result of that, he has been backed into 6.00 and fourth favourite.

Collingwood supporters haven't had much to cheer about over the past few seasons so this may be their big chance to get a trophy in the cabinet.

ELECTIONS

The betting on who would be the New Zealand prime minister predicted it would be a cliff hanger and that is how it panned out.

It may well be weeks before the 'winner' will be known as both Helen Clark and Don Brash try and piece together a government. The closing prices were 1.65 for Don Brash, and 2.10 for Helen Clark, with tremendous support for both at those prices.

Close to $600,000 was wagered on the NZ election, making it the third highest amount we have ever taken on an election behind the last Australian Federal election and the USA Presidential election.

A late splurge for Don Brash in the final week (2.70 into 1.65) meant we got ourselves into a position where it didn't really matter who won, both were handy winners in our book, which is a rarity in election betting.

Until next week, good punting For further information contact Gerard Daffy at Centrebet on 02 9206 8715 or centrebet@centrebet.com
