999/1 USA fall short
11:45
Monday 29 June
|
The USA fell at the final hurdle in their
bid to cause arguably the biggest tournament upset in football history
against Brazil in the final of the Confederations Cup tonight, having
been backed at the maximum odds of 999-1 on betting exchange
Betfair. And when they
sensationally led 2-0 at half-time, they were 1-3 favourites on
Betfair to win the Cup.

Origin II
Update
19:13
Tuesday 23 June
UPDATED |
A
TAB Sportsbet
customer has placed some added pressure on both whistleblowers Shayne
Hayne and Tony Archer along with video referees Bill Harrigon and Tim
Mander in tomorrow night's Origin II by investing $700 on a "Penalty
Try" being the first try scored in the match. The bet was placed by a
Qld customer at the odds of 150/1 and will return $105,700 if that
result occurs. In other Origin betting news today the largest bet taken
on the match so far is $75,000 at 1.65 on Qld. NSW have some support
with a bet of $30,000 on the Blues +12.5 at 1.38.
Meanwhile yesterday,
TAB Sportsbet
accepted their biggest wager ever - a successful $800,000 punt on Roger
Federer winning his first round Wimbledon match at 1.01.
UPDATE (25th July): The hold not as big as Game 1 but TAB
Sportsbet report that $4.48m was bet on Game 2 which represented a 22.2%
increase on last year. This takes the total Origin hold so far to $9.57m
with one match remaining. Interest is still high with over 172,000
individual bets taken which is up 26.6% on Game 2 last year. NSW
interest has been incredible with the holds up 34.5% and tickets up
28.3% from Game 2 last year. Interstate (non NSW) customers have had a
big Origin so far with winning results (for them) on both matches
following Qld victories. NSW were the subject of a huge plunge yesterday
firming up from 2.40 to 2.10 by game time with Qld drifiting from 1.55
to 1.73.

Firm pays out on Federer - before a ball is
served
02:06
Monday 22 June |
Following in the footsteps of their new
majority owners
Paddy Power,
Sportsbet have
announced an early "PR" payment on Roger Federer winning Wimbledon. The
move is costing the company in excess of a "five-figure" sum. “With
Nadal’s withdrawal, we are so sure that the Swiss master will take out
this tournament that we don’t see any point waiting for the final
result. We expect Federer to land his historic 15th grand slam
tournament to make him the most successful tennis player ever,
potentially without dropping a set” said Matt Tripp, CEO of
Sportsbet.
The move follows yesterdays announcement that the company would refund
all monies wagered on Rafael Nadal after he withdrew from the tournament
due to a knee injury. On the tournament eve, Federer is trading at 1.91
with
Betfair. Andy Murray is a
clear-cut second fave at 3.90 with Novak Djokovic at 16.50.

Friday 19 June |
AFL:

TENNIS: Rafael Nadal's Wimbledon price is out to 10.00 at
Betfair after he lost an
exhibition match to Lleyton Hewitt. He has traded as low as 2.52 and as

difficult to play at Wimbledon, his knees are not good, he cannot bend.
This is his first match, we wait." Roger Federer is trading at 2.00 to
win back-to-back slam titles.

has had a major impact on the football betting markets for next season.

Premiership as the news broke today (they have been backed as low as
11-8) and are currently trading at 21-10. United have also drifted to

Nadal
uncertainty
12:33
Wednesday 10 June |
As speculation mounted that Rafael Nadal
was about to announce that he was pulling out of Wimbledon, the Spaniard
was a bit vague as to how his prospects are. "I will give 200% to be at
100% for the most important date in world tennis. I will not go out and
play on any court, let alone Centre Court at Wimbledon, if I am not
100%," Nadal said.
Betfair report: A few weeks
back when all was rosy in the Nadal garden, the defending champion
traded at just 2.50 to successfully defend his title. As Federer
comprehensively beat Nadal's conqueror in the final of the French Open
on Sunday afternoon and the extent of Nadal's injury was unknown, the
world number one was trading at 6.00 for a repeat of Wimbledon glory.
But as speculation grew this afternoon that his injury would keep him
out of the tournament altogether, he drifted to odds of 18.00 with over
£5,000 traded at 11.00.
Nadal is now back into odds of 5.30 as fans, punters and his rivals wait
with baited breath for him to make a final decision about whether he's
fit to play after all. Roger Federer is the clear favourite at 2.30 to
win the Wimbledon crown he lost in such dramatic circumstances last year
with Andy Murray next in the betting at 6.80.

Sportsbet to
takeover IASBet
23:12
Wednesday 3 June |
A new goliath has emerged from the
consolidation in the Australian sports betting industry.
Sportsbet (51% owned
by
Paddy Power)
has agreed to acquire International All Sports Limited (IAS Bet),
the company which was the target of a failed takeover attempt earlier
this year by rival
Centrebet.
The
Sportsbet cash offer
is valued at 0.60 per share, 10 cents about the previous closing price.
Centrebet
were offering between 0.28 and 0.33 per share in their offer.
Mark Read and the
IAS Bet board have
unanimously recomended to their shareholders that the transaction
proceed subject to any new offer. It is antipated that the takeover will
be finalised within 3-4 months.
Whether punters have anything to gain from the takeover remains
uncertain. What is certain is that bookmakers across Australia are
increasingly cutting off winning punters and introducing a strategy of
only welcoming losers. Good for business maybe, but reduced competition
is unlikely to change this trend.

Nadal loses
first match at Roland Garros
02:12
Monday 1 June |
Swede Robin Soderling has done the
impossible and become the first player to defeat four-time champ Rafael
Nadal at the French Open. The clay-king Nadal had won his last 32 sets
in a row at Roland Garros and had never even been pushed to five sets in
his 31-0 run at the venue. But all that changed on Sunday.
Nadal started the match as a best-priced 1.02 (1/50) with traditional
bookies. Soderling was 33.50 at
Pinnacle but as much as
48.00 (47/1) was traded pre-match at
Betfair. Over $500,000 was
matched on Nadal at 1.02 and a further $2.3 million at 1.03. All up,
$12.18 million of the $36 million traded on the encounter was matched on
Nadal between 1.02 and 1.10.
Punters at
Betfair weren't giving up
on Nadal in a hurry. When he broke Soderling early in the fourth set
while down 2 sets to 1, he was into 1.22 with Soderling out to 5.30. At
3-all when Soderling broke back it was 1.65/2.50 and entering the 4th
set breaker it was 1.69/2.42. Even after losing the opening point on his
serve in the breaker, Nadal was still a 1.83 favourite to win the match.
The rest is history as Soderling raced to a 6-1 lead before winning the
breaker. Roger Federer is now a 2.40 title fave at
Betfair after previously
trading as high as 16.50.
