A-LEAGUE ROUND EIGHT
Gold Coast vs Melbourne
NO PLAY
The early season favourites for the title
meets the leagues most successful team in what is a much anticipated
contest. Miron Bleiberg will be seething after his side’s performance
against the Central Coast last weekend. They allowed the Mariners far too
much space in midfield and were made to pay. To make matters worse Shane
Smeltz was red carded and will miss this one. The Victory were once again
able to pick up the points against there ‘bunnies’, Adelaide. Nick Ward’s
unusual 7th minute strike gave the Victory an early lead, before Scotsman
Grant Brebner was on hand to finish off some scrappy defending. It’s very
hard to pick a winner here, in what should be an enthralling contest.

The Glory travel to Newcastle on Friday with
renewed confidence after finally snapping their six game losing streak on
the road. In an extraordinary match the Glory were gifted numerous
opportunities by the Roar and came away with a 4-2 win. The Jets had a glut
of opportunities against Sydney but were unable to capitalise and left empty
handed. The Glory have an impressive record against the Jets and I like them
to take all three points away from Energy Australia Stadium.
A-LEAGUE ROUND SEVEN

The Fury we’re able to secure their first
victory on the weekend thanks to a delightful lob from the man they call
‘God’. Robbie Fowlers 54th minute strike was enough for the Fury to leave
the Sydney Football Stadium with all three points, but manager Ian Ferguson
was quick to point out that it was a true team performance. A lot of credit
has to go to Paul Henderson who after being dropped last week, came back
into the starting eleven in spectacular fashion saving a John Aloisi penalty
before half time. The Phoenix were the better side against Melbourne, but
will be rueing conceding a free kick inside Carlos Hernandez’s range.
Wellington hasn’t lost a game at home this season, but will face some stiff
competition from an in form North Queensland.

Sydney FC host Newcastle on Sunday in one of
the many local derbies of the A-League. If Branko Culina was upset about the
Jets performance against the Victory two weeks ago then he must have been
seething about what he saw on Saturday. The Jets were comprehensively
outplayed by the Roar and ended up succumbing 3-0. Sydney were good in
patches against the Fury, but were upset by the A-League’s cellar dwellers.
Sydney have a great record against the Jets, having only lost twice to them
in there fourteen previous meetings. After two losses in a row I expect that
Sydney will be able to get their names back on the winners list with a
comfortable victory.
Brisbane v Perth
NO PLAY
Despite what has been a some what sluggish
start to the season, the Brisbane Roar find themselves in third place on the
table. They will be hoping to consolidate this position when they host Perth
on Sunday evening. The Roar put together their most accomplished performance
against the Jets on the weekend with a comfortable 3-0 victory. Reinaldo
marked his comeback with a goal and an assist and he should form a
formidable strike force with Sergio Van Dijk. The Glory skipped away to a
two goal lead against glamour club the Gold Coast, before a late Shane
Smeltz strike meant they had to settle for a share of the points. Perth’s
away form in the last couple of seasons has been nothing short of woeful and
I see the Roar being able to capitalise on this and come away with the
points.
A-LEAGUE ROUND SIX
Wellington vs Melbourne
NO PLAY
It looks like déjà vu for the Victory this
season, as they once again struggle to defend their title. Last week against
the Jets a defensive lapse let the Jets nick a point. The Wellington Phoenix
was unlucky not to take the three points against Adelaide, as a refereeing
blunder cost Paul Ifill the winner. The Victory has also lost Danny Allsopp
to the Middle East and is unlikely to get ninety minutes out of skipper
Kevin Muscat. They have signed Robbie Kruse from Brisbane though and he is a
chance to make his debut. I think the Victory will get back on the winners
board here, but will not take them on at this price.

It was the same old story for Perth last week,
as they were able to fathom plenty of chances but couldn’t even take a point
from Central Coast. The Gold Coast and in particular Shane Smeltz keep on
keeping on. They were able to capitalise on two half chances last week and
come away with the points. They will also retain marquee man Jason Culina
from international duty, but lose Joel Porter. Gold Coast has thus far not
put a foot wrong and should come away with three points again.

Sydney faces North Queensland for the second
time this season on Saturday night. Last time the two met it was billed as
the battle of the marquee men, Aloisi and Fowler. On that occasion it was
Sydney who took the three points with Aloisi scoring twice in an impressive
showing. Credit has to be given to the Fury though, who have shown some
great signs after conceding eight goals in their first two outings. Robbie
Fowler remains a constant threat up front, while Ufuk Talay must be given a
lot of the credit for the vast improvement North Queensland has shown. While
I expect Sydney to win this game, I think that they are well under the odds
and wouldn’t be surprised if North Queensland took a point here.

Adelaide hosts the Central Coast on Friday
night, hoping to turn around what has been a very ordinary start to the
season. Last week against Wellington the Reds were exposed defensively, and
in the end only left with a point because of a poor refereeing decision.
There has however been some good news for Adelaide this week, with skipper
Travis Dodd returning to the starting line up and the club announcing they
have finally been able to secure a major sponsor. Central Coast put in a
workman like performance against Perth last week and in the end escaped with
the three points, thanks to a Tando Velaphi slip. In the corresponding
fixture last year Adelaide got out to a 3-0 lead, but in typical fashion the
Mariners were able to peg them back and take a point. I can’t see this match
being similarly high scoring.

The Fury was finally able to open their
account this season with a thrilling draw in Adelaide on Friday night. Dutch
striker Dyron Daal experienced the highs and lows of football, firstly
drawing the Fury level with an intelligent finish, before inexplicably
conceding a last minute penalty via a ridiculous hand ball. It was the same
old Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, producing a glut of opportunities,
but still struggling to find the back of the net. Fortunately this time it
didn’t come back to bite them and they held on thanks to Craig Moore’s
powerful header. North Queensland has shown some great signs in the past
fortnight, but I think a side with the fire power of Brisbane might be a bit
much for them.
Gold Coast vs Sydney
NO PLAY
The early season table toppers face off at
Skilled Park on Saturday night, in a match up that will decide who the early
favourite for the title is. Clive Palmers dream of an unbeaten season came
to an abrupt halt on Sunday thanks to some careful planning by Branko
Culina. It will be interesting to see how the Gold Coast respond to some of
the criticism they will undoubtedly receive during the week. Sydney was able
to snatch a victory deep into the second half for the third time this
season. They don’t seem to be playing with absolute fluency, but ominously
are still grinding out results. Perhaps the best news for Sydney was that
marquee man John Aloisi was able to find the back of the net for the third
time this season, meaning he has already bettered last year’s tally. I don’t
think the Gold Coast enjoyed their first taste of defeat and I’m sure they
will be keen to make amends in what should be a thriller.
Central Coast vs Perth
NO PLAY
After a slow start to the season the Perth
Glory’s host of big name recruits are starting to gel. The Glory had their
second win in a row at home this year on Friday night, thanks to a brace
from new front man Branko Jelic. The Central Coast has had a little dip in
form after their opening night victory over defending champions Melbourne.
Since that match they have only managed to score once and really struggled
to fathom any meaningful chances against the Roar on Saturday. The Central
Coast can however take some solace from the fact that they haven’t lost to
the Glory since Round 2 2006. Despite this impressive record I fancy that
the Glory will take something out of this game, even if it isn’t all three
points.

Adelaide United travels to Wellington on
Friday hoping to start resurrecting what has been a horrific start to the
season. After struggling to find the back of the net for the first three
rounds of the season they scored three times against North Queensland on
Friday Night. Unfortunately for Aurelio Vidmar they forgot how to defend and
were lucky to take a point from the match in the end. The night only got
worse from there on with defender Robert Cornthwaite charged for allegedly
assaulting a bouncer after heading out with team mates to drown their
sorrows. The Phoenix came to Sydney looking like a side that would be
ecstatic to escape with a point. The plan almost worked before late goals to
Brendan Gan and John Aloisi meant that Ricki Herbert’s men left empty
handed. It’s very hard to pick a winner here in a contest that has
traditionally produced bucket loads of goals.

The Newcastle Jets will be looking to continue
their fantastic start to the season when they travel to Melbourne on
Thursday night. The Jets did what Clive Palmer said no team could, by
defeating the Gold Coast last week. The Victory went to Perth with a host of
attacking talent in their starting eleven. It worked for the first half with
the visitors able to fathom a host of chances. Unfortunately their poor
finishing came back to bite them as Perth were able to convert twice from
minimal opportunities. The Victory will be without key play maker Carlos
Hernandez who is away on international duty with Costa Rica. Newcastle’s has
an astonishing record against the Victory (they have only lost three times
to the Victory in twelve encounters) and at these odds they are certainly
worth a nibble.

Sydney FC host Wellington on Sunday, hoping to
continue there unbeaten start to the season. Sydney were lacking a bit of
flare last week against the Mariners in what was a pretty lacklustre derby.
The Phoenix will leave Brisbane very happy after pinching a point thanks to
a late Chris Greenacre header. They should also come to Sydney with a fair
amount of confidence after winning twice at the Sydney Football Stadium in
the past two seasons. However the Phoenix defence will have to improve if
they are to keep Sydney’s attacking trio of Aloisi, Brosque and Danning
quiet all day. I think the Phoenix will sit back in defence, so it could be
quite a frustrating day for Sydney, and with Wellingtons impressive record
against Sydney I expect them to at least pickup a point.

If there were any doubts that the Gold Coast
are the team to beat in the A-League this year they were quickly put to bed
inside the first 50 minutes at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night. The new
boys dominated the home team and came away with the three points, keeping
Clive Palmer’s dream of an unbeaten season alive. The Jets were poor against
the Glory, struggling to string passes together on the slick surface at
Members Equity Stadium. It’s hard to pick a weakness in the Gold Coast’s
line up; they also showed they have great depth with Steve Fitzsimmons and
Zenon Caravella stepping into the side in the past fortnight with great
success. If Shane Smeltz continues to score at this rate he is on target for
a 50 goal plus season, so much of Branko Culina’s planning will revolve
around subduing the Kiwi hit man. It would take a brave man to oppose the
Gold Coast in this sought of form and I certainly won’t be doing it this
week.

For the second time this season the Brisbane
Roar surrendered what appeared to be a match winning lead on the weekend.
After conceding two second half goals to draw with Melbourne last week, the
Roar once again conceded a late goal, this time to Wellington’s Chris
Greenacre. The Central Coast had multiple opportunities late on against
Sydney, but couldn’t find a winner. The Central Coast have only defeated
Brisbane twice in fourteen attempts and when these two met in last years
finals it was the Roar progressing to the preliminary final, winning 4-1 on
aggregate. I think the Roar have enough fire power to defeat the Mariners
here in what looms as a season defining match up.
Adelaide v Nth Qld UNDER 2.5

Adelaide hosts North Queensland on Friday
night with both teams desperately needing a win to get there seasons back on
track. Adelaide will be without skipper Travis Dodd and young playmaker
Fabien Barbiero, while the Fury has lost Socceroo David Williams. Adelaide
was handed a reality check on the weekend by a super impressive Gold Coast
outfit. They have had some real problems finding the back of the net this
season, with Travis Dodd’s penalty against Perth there solitary goal for the
year. North Queensland put in a far better performance against Melbourne,
but sadly came away with nothing to show for there efforts. After the
embarrassment of a 5-0 loss to the Gold Coast they showed some real spirit
on the weekend but were undone by a smart bit of finishing by Archie
Thompson. If Adelaide are to live up to expectations and finish at the
pointy end of the table then this really is a must win. I see them taking
all three points off North Queensland, but can’t see it being an overly
entertaining contest.

The Glory host Melbourne on Friday night in
what should be an exhilarating contest. Both sides tasted victory for the
first time this season at the weekend. The Glory was able to create enough
chances to wear Newcastle down, while Melbourne was unconvincing in there
1-0 defeat of North Queensland. If Perth are to upset last years premiers
they must stop Victory play maker Carlos Hernandez, who has been granted too
much space in the last fortnight after being well held by the Mariners.
Melbourne will have to reshuffle their defence again because of a groin
injury to Evan Berger. Surprisingly Melbourne has only defeated Perth once
in six attempts at Members Equity Stadium. I think this game will probably
end in a draw, but wouldn’t be surprised if Perth nicked it.

The last game of the weekend sees the
Newcastle Jets taking on Perth Glory in what promises to be an exciting
contest. The Glory are yet to open their account this season, but can
consider themselves unlucky not to have taken something away from Wellington
last week after dominating play for much of the second half. The Jets were
solid in there 1-1 draw with local rivals the Central Coast. The Glory have
recalled striker Eugene Dadi, while the Jets have included young gun Ben
Kantarovski. These sides have a history of producing high scoring contests
with 10 of the 12 games they’ve played producing 3 goals or more. I fancy
the Glory might have a win here, but think there will be plenty of goals in
this one.

The Brisbane Roar had all but wrapped up there
first win of the season at half time last week. Unfortunately for the Roar,
Melbourne fought back and in the end the points were shared. The Wellington
Phoenix were dominated for long periods by Perth but secured a vital win
thanks to a Leo Bertos thunderbolt. The Roar has lost experienced defender
Josh McLoughlan to a groin injury, while Liam Reddy remains in some doubt
with a quad injury. The Wellington Phoenix hasn’t beaten Brisbane in 6
contests thus far, and I get the feeling the Roar will be too hungry for
Wellington at home.

It’s fair to say that thus far the North
Queensland Fury have struggled in the A-League. After a respectable 3-2 loss
at home to Sydney first up, the Fury were given a lesson by Culina and co.
as the Gold Coast cruised to a 5-0 victory. It was almost déjà vu for the
Victory last week as they once again found themselves 2-0 down inside the
first half hour. In what was arguably the best match since the inauguration
of the A-League, the Victory twice came from two goals down to draw 3-3 with
Brisbane. Carlos Hernandez was back to his brilliant best and will have to
be closely monitored by the Fury defence. The Victory has addressed its lack
of quality defenders by signing former player Adrian Leijer from Fulham. I
think that Melbourne’s class will see them come away with the points here in
what should be a free flowing contest.

The Central Coast host Sydney FC on Saturday
afternoon in what promises to be an enthralling contest. Mark Bridge proved
to be a super sub last week, as his 77th minute winner meant that Sydney
came away with there 2nd win in as many starts. The Central Coast created
the better of the chances against Newcastle, but could only manage a 1-1
draw. Each side will be at full strength barring Mariners defender Chris
Doig. The last five times these sides have met they have produced more than
3 goals, and I expect a similarly high scoring affair here.
Gold Coast vs Adelaide
NO PLAY
The Gold Coast have set the competition a
light in there first two outings in the A-League. Firstly getting one over
there arch rivals Brisbane, before smashing fellow new comers North
Queensland 5-0 last week. Jason Culina has been instrumental in both
victories, while Joel Porter and Shane Smeltz lead the competition in
assists and goals respectively. Adelaide has once again been solid as a rock
in defence, conceding only one goal in 180 minutes of football.
Unfortunately for the Reds they have only been able to score once
themselves, via a Travis Dodd penalty. However after missing the first
couple of games due to swine flu, striker Lloyd Owusu has been added to the
squad. The Gold Coast are playing brilliant football at the moment, but it
will be interesting to see how they go in there first real road trip against
a disciplined Adelaide side.

Sydney hosts Adelaide in what promises to be
an exhilarating contest at the Sydney Football Stadium. Adelaide were at
there defensive best last week against the Glory, frustrating Perth for long
periods and eventually winning it via a Travis Dodd penalty. Sydney on the
other hand were at there attacking best, teaching new boys North Queensland
a thing or two about counter attacking football along the way. Sydney holds
a slight advantage in the head to head meetings, winning 7 to Adelaide’s 5.
I doubt that Aloisi, Danning and Brosque will be given the space allowed to
them by the Fury this week by Adelaide’s experienced defenders. Sydney
should probably come away with a tight victory, but I don’t see a lot of
goals in this one.

The Wellington Phoenix and the Perth Glory
will both be looking to open there accounts for the season when they meet at

in there 1-0 loss to Adelaide, while the Phoenix attacked well but defended
poorly against the Jets. The Phoenix have made no changed to there squad,
while Perth gain Wayne Srhoj but lose Jamie Coyne to injury. I have a
feeling that Perth may win this one, but am not willing to back them based
on there showing last week
Melbourne vs Brisbane

These two sides were both widely regarded as
title contenders in the pre-season, but were both upstaged at home last week
by less fancied opposition. The Victory conceded early goals to the
Mariners, and were never able to recover. The Roar outplayed the Gold Coast
for large portions of the match, but once again poor finishing cost them
dearly. The Victory will have to field an experimental defence because of
the loss of Kevin Muscat. Matthew Kemp will come into the centre of defence,
while midfielder Nicky Ward will take Kemp’s place at right back. The Roar
will be without Andrew Packed due to a torn adductor. I feel that without
Muscat the champions look ripe for the picking here, but am not willing to
bet against them at home.

The round kicks off in Gosford on Friday
night, with the Central Coast Mariners hosting the Newcastle Jets in one of
the more heated rivalries in the A-League, the F3 derby. The Mariners began
there season on a perfect note last Thursday night, accomplishing what they
had never done before by downing Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. The Jets
showed some real attacking flair against the Wellington Phoenix and despite
some dismal defending were deserving winners. Lawrie McKinna has been forced
to make one change to his squad with Nik Mrdja replacing the injured Chris
Doig, while the Jets go into the match unchanged. These two sides have met a
resounding 17 times in the past four seasons with the Jets narrowly holding
sway with 6 wins to the Mariners 5. It’s very tough to pick a winner
whenever these two meet; however in 13 of the 17 matches that they have

battle occurring here.

three points, despite being the second best team on the pitch for much of
the night. While the Fury showed some real heart to come back from 2-0 down,
before eventually succumbing to Sydney 3-2. Unfortunately for the Gold
Coast, Adam Griffiths has decided to chase some serious dollars in Saudi
Arabia, but the Gold Coast look to have adequate cover in Zenon Caravella
and Steve Fitzsimmons. The Fury has managed to sign Socceroo Shane
Steffanutto in a bid to address some glaringly obvious defensive issues.
Miron Bleiberg has promised his team will put on a show in there first game
at home, and I can see things getting ugly very quickly for the Fury here.
A-LEAGUE ROUND ONE

The final match of the
first round sees two of last years cellar dwellers squaring off. The
Newcastle Jets will be hoping to improve on a disappointing season in which
they went from champions to wooden spooners. There was some consolation
though, with the Jets reaching the second phase of the Asian Champions
League. The Phoenix showed some real improvement last year, but
unfortunately has lost two of their better players in Shane Smeltz and Glen
Moss. The Jets pre-season has been limited because of the Champions League,
playing Sydney twice for a loss and a draw, while the Phoenix have played
Melbourne and the Central Coast with both matches resulting in draws. I get
the feeling the Jets will win this one, but I’m not willing to take them on
at that price.
Gold Coast vs Brisbane

If the Gold Coast are in
fact half as good as they think they are then this game should be a walk in
the park. The arrogant A-League newcomers have boldly predicted that they
will not only win the league, but do so without losing a game. Without a
ball being kicked there is already a genuine dislike between these two sides
with Frank Farina labelling it a 'disgrace' when Miron Bleiberg failed to
attend a press conference promoting the match. Brisbane's pre-season has
been patchy in parts with a couple of victories of North Queensland, a loss
to the Jets and an honourable loss to Scottish Premier League side Celti.
The Gold Coast have managed to get through the pre-season undefeated,
impressively defeating English Premier League side Fulham. I expect this to
be a high intensity with plenty of feeling. If Cullina can dominate the
middle of the park and supply Smeltz and Porter I feel that the Gold Coast
may sneak home, but couldn't justify betting on them.

A-League new comers the North Queensland Fury
host Sydney FC in a match being built up as a shootout between two of the
leagues biggest names, Fowler and Aloisi. Fowler comes to the Fury with 266
Premier League goals under his belt and a reputation as one of the world’s
best finishers, but with a sizeable question mark on his fitness. Aloisi was
disappointing last season but will be desperate to make amends and justify
his healthy pay packet. The Fury’s pre-season form has been fairly ordinary
losing to five of the six A-League sides they have played, where as Sydney
were able to remain undefeated thanks mainly to a stingy defence. When the
two sides met back in June, Sydney easily accounted for the under strength
Fury 4-0. The Fury looks exciting in the front half of the park with Fowler
accompanied by Socceroo David Williams, Fred Agius and former York City
striker Daniel McBreen, however the defence has been hampered by injury with
Scott Wilson and Jacob Timpano both out for extended periods of time. If
Fowler can get enough supply then I’m sure the Fury can cause quite a few
upsets this season, unfortunately for them I don’t see this happening
against a very well organised Sydney outfit.

The season kicks off in Melbourne on Thursday
night, as the defending champion’s host the Central Coast Mariners. The
Victory’s pre-season has been solid without being spectacular; they were
very competitive against Fulham despite the lopsided scoresheet and defeated
Adelaide 2-1, impressively scoring twice from set pieces. Perhaps more
importantly for the Victory they have been able to keep the majority of
there championship winning squad intact. The Mariners went through there
pre-season campaign undefeated and like most seasons continue to fly under
the radar. Scoring goals shouldn’t be a problem with the returning Adam
Kwasnik complementing Matt Simon, Dylan Macallister and the injury prone Nik
Mrdja up front. They do however look a little light on at the back and have
signed the experienced Chris Doig to try and rectify this problem. These two
sides have a history of producing plenty of goals whenever they meet, so
this should be a free flowing contest under the roof of Eithad Stadium. The
Central Coast has never beaten the Victory at Etihad and hasn’t won an

The Perth Glory has finally decided they’ve
had enough of wallowing at bottom of the A-League table and have recruited
aggressively in the pre-season. They have managed to sign three Socceroos,
and in doing so look stronger in every area of the park. Chris Coyne and
ex-Derby defender Andy Todd sure up the defence. Jacob Burns adds some class
to the midfield and Mile Sterjovski is a proven goal scorer up front.
Adelaide on the other hand has been fairly quiet on the transfer front. Iain
Fyfe has been brought in to replace the gaping hole left by the departure of
Sasa Ognenovski, Adam Hughes will add depth to the midfield and Inseob Shin
will look to bring some attacking flair. Vidmars most interesting signing
though looks to be former Ghana international Lloyd Owusu who has an
impressive goal scoring record in the lower leagues of England.
Unfortunately for the Reds, Owusu contracted swine flu and will now miss the
first month of action. Adelaide have won 4 of the 6 games these two have
contested at Hindmarsh Stadium, however this is a completely different Glory
side this year and I expect them to start the season with an away win.
