The influence of the internet on sports betting

Betting online is a relatively recent phenomenon, with the sports betting industry taking its first step into the online world a little over a decade ago. Since then, the market has grown apace, with new sports betting sites springing up on a regular basis.

Before the internet took grip of the industry, bets had to be placed in person, either at a betting shop, or at the race track or sports ground. These situations were a little daunting for some, but the convenience and anonymity now afforded by online sports betting sites means that more punters than ever have been drawn to the sports betting world.

The same can be said of casino gambling, poker and card games, and bingo too. Players once nervous of their abilities can now play from the comfort of their own homes, under far less pressure than in offline gaming situations, and are free to make mistakes without feeling that they are being judged.

One aspect of online sports betting and gambling that has often been criticised is that the online world takes away from the social aspect of these pastimes. However, most online sports betting, casino and bingo sites now have their own forums and chat rooms, which have grown to become almost as popular as the games and betting itself.

These chat rooms not only make it easy for players to meet fellow players and make friends, but they also provide forums for players to swap their knowledge, betting tips, do’s and don’ts, and their general experiences of the online betting and gaming world. This allows beginners a real head start over pre-internet players as learning is easier than ever before thanks to the world wide web.

However, one of the things that helps to make internet sports betting so successful is also one of its pitfalls. Being able to place bets 24 hours a day, every day of the year, without having to step out of your own front door may be convenient, but it presents too much temptation for some, and the number of sports betters with gambling problems is now on the rise.

The latest trend for sports betting sites is for them to expand into other gambling areas. Many of the larger sports betting sites now have their own casino and particularly poker offshoots. Mainstream casino sites like 32 Red have also been quick to add bingo gaming to their successful casino businesses, with an eye to increasing the number of female visitors to their sites.
