DAILY ANALYSIS .. with OnThePunt's Tennis expert in Melbourne
Updated 7:45 PM AEDST, Wednesday 16 January
THURSDAY 17th - 2ND ROUND MATCHES (TOP HALF DRAW)

SUMMARY:
4/5 plays (avg price 2.40), +25.25 units (+53.5 on week)

PLAYS:

Juan Ignacio Chela 5.05 ARG vs. Pete Sampras 1.25 USA (8)
- While Chela was outclassed by Federer in the Sydney final last week, he is in top form and a solid win over Okun in the 1st round is a nice preparation for this. Sampras has looked sharp so far this year and looks to have too much experience, but the weather will be warming up in Melbourne tomorrow and it might take it's toll on the veteran. Chela took Sampras to five sets in the third round here last year and is most certainly the value bet at 4/1.
2 units Chela at 5.05 (Canbet)
-2

Wayne Ferreira 1.80 RSA vs. David Nalbandian 2.21 ARG
- Interesting match up. As predicted, the veteran South African had no problems disposing of Gambill in the 1st round. He is playing some great tennis at the moment, and should have too much experience for the promising Argentinean for this court 9 encounter.
6 units Ferreira at 1.80 (Camelot)
+4.8

Xavier Malisse 2.10 BEL (29) vs. Todd Martin 1.95 USA
- H-H 0-1. The experienced Martin should have too much for the volatile Malisse in this late afternoon game on show court 3. He had a win against Sampras in Adelaide a fortnight ago and his form in his straight sets win over the dangerous Sa in the opening round is enough for me.
5 units at 1.95 (Global)
+4.75

Gaston Gaudio 4.00 ARG vs. Arnaud Clement 1.35 FRA (15)
- The Frenchman was rather unimpressive in his three-set win over Saretta in the opening round and might be vulnerable in this one. The Argentinean has some big scalps to his name and I'm tipping him to have another one here.
3 units Gaudio at 4.00 (Stan James)
+9

MULTI-BET:

Nicolas Escude 1.29 FRA (30) vs. Alex Calatrava 3.80 ESP
- The Frenchman got off to a slow start against Reid, while Calatrava got past Olivier Rochus in five. Escude will appreciate the run and have too much.

Marat Safin 1.13 RUS (9) vs. Christophe Rochus 6.50 BEL
- Christophe had a nice win over Sluiter and will give 100% but this does look tough.

Alexandre Simoni 5.00 BRA vs. Andrei Pavel 1.20 ROM (25)
- Pavel got the job done in the opening round while Simoni almost threw it away agisnt Fukarek. The Romanian is starting to show some of his form from his bright spell last year and will have too much class.

Roger Federer 1.07 SUI (11) vs. Attila Savolt 9.00 HUN
- Federer too strong.

10 units at 1.87 (Bet365) +8.7

OTHER MATCHES - SELECTIONS IN BOLD (Best early prices):

Alberto Martin 2.00 ESP vs. Michel Kratochvil 1.85 SUI
- H-H 1-1. Tough match up this one. Martin might draw the wrath of the Melbourne crowd after his tactics against Hewitt on Tuesday, but the guy can play. He'll just keep getting balls back, but it might not be enough against Kratochvil, who impressed in the opening round here.

Marcelo Rios 1.62 CHI vs. Karol Kucera 2.37 SVK
- The Chilean had an slight lapse in the opening round when dropping a set to the lowly Aussie Crabb. Kucera is playing solid tennis at the moment, but I don't believe it will be enough to get past Rios.

Nicolas Lapentti 1.29 ECU (23) vs. Jose Acasuso 4.00 ARG
- The young Argentinean impressed with his 1st round win over Jan Vacek coming back from two sets down. Experience to get Lapentti home in this one.

Rainer Schuettler 2.00 GER vs. Carlos Moya 1.83 ESP (17)
- H-H 2-1. Moya was in big trouble in the last round until his opponent went down with a leg injury in the 5th set. He defeated the German in the round of 16 here last year, but the form does look to have dropped off since.

Jean-Francois Bachelot 9.00 FRA vs. Tommy Haas 1.07 GER (7)
- Haas.

Byron Black 2.62 ZIM vs. Albert Costa 1.57 ESP
- An amazing comeback from Byron in the first round when he looked down and out two sets down to Labadze. Costa impressed in his win over the in-form Mantilla and looks likely to make to the third round here.

Ivan Ljubicic 3.75 CRO vs. Andy Roddick 1.33 USA (13) (ret.)
- The A-rod wants to be a little careful in this one. The Croatian showed enormous spirit in getting past Ulihrach 9-7 in the 5th set of the 1st round match. It will be the first time Roddick has seen Vodafone Arena and he may take time to get used to the conditions after Tuesday night's match.

Mikhail Youzhny 1.62 RUS vs. Mardy Fish 2.62 USA
- The Fishman has come through qualifying and the match fitness at Melbourne Park showed when he upset Santoro in the opening round. Youzhny however, had a great win against Llodra and looks to have the edge for mine, but too close to call.
